At Mwangaza Light, we believe that faith communities have a powerful role to play in climate action and environmental stewardship.

Last week, CEO, delivered a lecture at Saint Pauls University on Eco-theology and Clean Energy as part of an Eco-theology residential short course training.

The training, convened by Anglican Development Services - Kenya in partnership with The Green Anglicans Movement of Kenya , and , brought together ACK clergy and ADS regional teams to build capacity in integrating environmental stewardship and climate consciousness into faith-based leadership and practice.

Through , we continue to strengthen capacity for faith leaders to drive within their communities.🌍

After a long day at work, convenience matters most.

For Mary Njoki, a businesswoman in Kakuma, her induction cooker has been a game changer. Getting home at 7:30pm, she no longer has to worry about long cooking hours because her meals are ready in minutes. What she loves most? The speed and affordability of the appliance as compared to gas.

Stories like Mary’s remind us why last-mile access matters. When clean cooking solutions reach communities everywhere, distance stops being a barrier, and more people get to enjoy safer and more modern kitchens.

Our work in Kakuma is made possible with the support of DanChurchAid Kenya, Last Mile Climate through the SOLCO Partnership, and ATEC Global, whose collaboration is helping turn clean energy access into an everyday reality.

Mwangaza Light was honoured to participate in the recent AGM of the Mothers’ Union of the The Anglican Church of Kenya , where we renewed and strengthened our partnership with this vital women’s movement. This collaboration forms part of our wider engagement with the Church, working together to support healthier families, stronger communities, and more sustainable institutions.

Under the shared message of “Cooking God’s Way,” we encouraged Mothers’ Union to embrace modern, clean cooking as an integral part of their mission for family stability, women’s wellbeing, and care for creation. We are grateful and excited about their confirmation to do so!

For many women, cooking is a daily responsibility, but too often, it comes with serious health risks. In Kenya, an estimated 28,000 women lose their lives each year due to indoor air pollution. We believe that women must not only be included, but empowered as leaders in the transition to cleaner, safer cooking solutions-within homes, schools, and church institutions.

Together with the Mothers’ Union, we are building a movement where faith, health, and sustainability come together in practical and life-changing ways.

Mwangaza Light and DanChurchAid Kenya had the privilege of hosting a visit from the Danish Embassy to Anglican schools in Murang’a County. The visit created space for in-depth engagement with school and church leadership from the Anglican Church of Kenya. We were also pleased to be joined by Gitte Dyrhagen Husager, Head of Programme, Advocacy and Learning at Folkekirkens Nødhjælp (DanChurchAid).

At the heart of the visit were conversations.

Building on energy audits conducted across the schools, we engaged leaders directly in their kitchens and institutions, listening to how they experience current energy challenges and how they think about transition. These were not abstract discussions, but grounded reflections on real constraints and decision-making processes.

School and church leaders spoke candidly about the factors they must balance:
– Cost and affordability over time
– Reliability and availability of fuels
– Cooking performance and taste preferences
– Safety, workload, and staff conditions
– Infrastructure requirements and space
– Access to financing and institutional budgeting cycles

Standing together in kitchens filled with smoke, these conversations became tangible. The urgency is clear- but so is the complexity of the transition.

We explored a range of clean cooking pathways, including different fuels and technologies, and discussed how transition can be phased and adapted to each institution. The openness and readiness of leaders to engage with these options was both encouraging and inspiring.

The visit concluded at ACK St. Peter’s Cathedral in Kenol, where Mwangaza Light and DCA has supported ACK Diocese of Muranga South in establishing a modern kitchen powered by solar electric cooking. The contrast is striking. Known locally as “the office,” the kitchen is clean, bright, and smoke-free; a space of dignity and efficiency that redefines institutional cooking. This is what transition can look like.

We are deeply encouraged by the Danish Embassy’s continued commitment to advancing modern cooking and by the strong partnership with DCA. This groundwork, rooted in listening, learning, and co-design, is essential to enabling scalable, sustainable change. The transition is not only possible-it is already underway.

In Kenya, institutional cooking continues to place significant pressure on both the environment and the people in the kitchen, with heavy reliance on firewood and exposure to smoke still a daily reality in many schools.

With support from FasterOikos, Mwangaza Light is working with schools in Kajiado County to introduce more efficient cooking solutions, reducing firewood use, improving kitchen conditions, and supporting more sustainable ways of preparing meals.

In last-mile communities like Kakuma, access to affordable cooking energy remains a daily challenge.

At Mwangaza Light, we are addressing energy poverty by providing accessible eCooking solutions on an affordable PayGo model. Families receive the appliances in their homes and pay gradually as they use them, making clean cooking manageable.

For many households in this area, access to these appliances means cooking at approximately KSh 20 per day, a meaningful cost-saving solution in a setting where resources are limited, thus enabling more families to transition to more affordable cooking that does not harm the envronment.

Beyond access, we prioritise activation on the ground. Through live demonstrations, product education sessions, and hands-on community engagement, we ensure families understand how to use the appliances efficiently. For proper adoption, knowledge is just as important as access!

This project is implemented in partnership with DanChurchAid Kenya and funded by DANIDA.
