Somewhere, right now, a woman is lighting a stove. But what powers that flame; and what it means for her life, can be two very different stories.
For millions of women, cooking is more than a daily routine; it is time spent gathering fuel, exposure to harmful smoke, and hours that could otherwise be used for education, business, or rest. Yet across the clean cooking sector, women are not only the primary users of cooking solutions; they are innovators, entrepreneurs, technicians, community mobilizers, and leaders transforming how households cook and live.
This International Women’s Day, the Clean Cooking Association of Kenya celebrates the women who are shaping the future of clean cooking across the value chain. From women manufacturing and distributing improved cookstoves, to those leading clean energy enterprises, conducting research, influencing policy, and driving adoption in communities, their contributions are powering real change.
And lest we forget; Clean cooking is also a gender equality issue. When households transition to cleaner cooking solutions, women and girls spend less time collecting fuel, experience better health outcomes, and gain more opportunities to participate in education, employment, and leadership. The ripple effects extend to entire communities.
However, meaningful progress requires intentional inclusion. Integrating Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) into clean cooking initiatives ensures that the transition leaves no one behind. Women, youth, persons with disabilities, and marginalized groups must not only benefit from clean cooking solutions but also have equal opportunities to participate in the sector as entrepreneurs, decision-makers, and innovators.
At the Clean Cooking Association of Kenya, we continue to champion an inclusive clean cooking ecosystem; one that recognizes the central role of women and actively creates pathways for diverse voices to shape the sector.
Today, we celebrate the resilience, leadership, and innovation of women across the clean cooking space.
to all the incredible women driving the clean cooking movement forward.
As we celebrate today, we must also ask ourselves: what more can we do to ensure the clean cooking transition is truly inclusive for every woman and every community?
