«Reworld - Night version» was a brief experiment for the opening of our Visual Load exhibition at Frieze Hannam Night last September. It’s an adaptation of our Reworld prismatic canvas teamed with a powerful searchlight set up on the rooftop of the neighbouring Gallery Shilla building 100m down the street. Reworld then splits this beam into hundreds of shafts of light that interweave computationally to draw into the air.

Extracts from exhibition introduction of Reworld (daytime version) by Jane Lee

Finally, on the sixth floor of the gallery, **Reworld** transforms its window into an optical apparatus that reorders our visual comprehension of the city. Thousands of diamond-cut micro-prisms, each operated by a precise electromechanical system, fragment and reorganise the sky, trees, buildings, shadows, and streets of the urban landscape into composite images. Whereas previous versions of the work used AI to orchestrate the prisms, here the artists have taken direct control.

The viewing experience is slow and demanding because the city initially appears fractured and unstable. After a minute or two, as the eyes relax and begin to adjust, the fragments coalesce into a single, mosaic–like image. The familiar becomes unfamiliar, remixed through optical intervention into a speculative future.

Although the viewer stands within the gallery, they encounter the view of the city not as remembered but as reimagined, in which memory and imagination are folded back into the act of seeing. Like the future it evokes, the work can only be experienced through time and with patience.

Introduction by curator Jane Lee
Unread Characters, a work that draws upon Yi Sang’s Crow’s Eye View. It is a poem written under an oppressive climate when language itself was fractured and estranged. Just as the original poems resisted fixed interpretation and reflected the imposed fragmentation of their time, the artists rewrote Crow’s Eye View by hand and trained it into a machine learning system. The handwritten text was reorganised by the internal logic of the AI, known as a latent space, and rematerialised through an array of lenses and lights into a two-dimensional lenticular structure.

Within the bounded viewing zone, a single character is always visible. But as the viewer moves within a range of one to three meters, shifting up, down, left, or right, the characters morph smoothly from one to the next. This transformation is not random but follows the internal structure of the machine’s internal logic. The work connects a historically censored linguistic expression with the contemporary mechanisms of algorithmic language, staging a dialogue between human resistance and computational patterning.

Here, reading is no longer confined to the eyes. It becomes an embodied act, where the entire body navigates a field of shifting language. The system acts as a collaborator in estrangement, reorganising words in ways that resist capture. The audience, too, is no longer a passive observer but a moving agent within the scattering, invited to explore where meaning is always partial and fluid. As in Yi Sang’s own Crow’s Eye View, the act of seeing is redefined as a precarious and fractured condition, never entirely stable.

Screens such as mobile phones, computers, and TVs are ubiquitous but they are not always truly satisfying. as a proposition for a new type of urban screen that takes the real world of the existing city in front of you and reconstructs it to render images that are both actual and abstract.

Created by the internationally acclaimed artist team Kimchi and Chips, is an innovative urban screen that constructs images not with traditional LEDs, but by remixing fragments from the surrounding landscape. Urban screens have become a principal material of the built environment, and are used to communicate ideas, convey ambitions, provide instructions, and contribute to the creation of a city’s aesthetic and mythology.

To quote Donna J. Haraway, “It matters what stories make worlds, what worlds make stories.” REWORLD is a screen that generates images solely from the city’s existing elements, reimagining and recycling reality into new messages and ideas. This screen operates using more than one thousand micro-prisms actuated by precision motors, which selectively refract the surroundings to form new images.

“REWORLD catches a palette of visual elements from the surrounding environment; from the weather, the colour of the light, the audience movements, and then remixes them to form new images." - Kimchi and Chips

Can human vision and perspectives be separated? Images from the surrounding cityscape reconstruct the world through more than one thousand micro-prisms in “REWORLD Type 2”, allowing your eyes to lead you to reopen your senses and experience a world formed by new images.

The International Collaboration of deTour 2024 is Kimchi and Chips , a team of Seoul-based artists Mimi Son and Elliot Woods. Kimchi and Chips is acclaimed for art and technology. Founded in 2009, their large-scale installations explore the intersections of light, space, and perception, creating immersive experiences that blur reality and illusion. A key aspect of their work is the use of advanced technologies, including 3D projection, artificial intelligence, and optics, exemplified by their “Light Barrier” series, which innovated volumetric image creation using light fields. Rooted in a belief that blends art, science and philosophy, they meticulously design every aspect of their projects, from coding to structural mechanics. Their works have been exhibited at prominent venues worldwide, including National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, ZKM Center for Art and Media and Ars Electronica, earning numerous accolades and solidifying their influence in the contemporary art and technology landscape.
