A clinic asks whether the plasma step puts heat into the skin. Physically it does not โ and the reason decides which numbers belong in the protocol.

Cold atmospheric plasma is a non-equilibrium state. Free electrons are heated far more efficiently than the heavy particles around them, so the electrons run very hot while ions and neutral gas molecules stay near ambient temperature. The heavy particles carry almost all of the mass, so the gas that meets the skin is not hot: published dermatology reviews report treated skin staying close to body temperature during CAP application (about 37โ38 ยฐC), below the 40 ยฐC ceiling defined for skin-safe operation (Khalaf et al., Eur J Med Res 2024;29:487).

Those high-energy electrons drive excitation, ionisation and dissociation at low gas temperature, producing reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, charged particles and local electric fields. That is why the barrier effect is described as transient permeabilisation rather than a thermal effect.

In plasma physics measurements on pure water, the formation rate of HโOโ and OH radicals dropped by orders of magnitude as the nozzle-to-surface gap widened from 0.5 to 5.5 cm, while nitrite and nitrate changed by about one order (Sergeichev et al., Front Phys 2021;8:614684 โ a model liquid, not skin). Distance and exposure time per area are protocol entries, not operator habits.
