The idea to create Hawa Akkar has risen out of the keenness of the founders and partners of the company to upgrade the electricity sector by utilizing an inexpensive, clean and reliable form of power and that is wind energy. In 2008, the first concrete step was taken into realizing this ambitious project, when The Electrical Utility of Aley signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government
of Lebanon. Since that date, it has been a consistent feature of government policy to have renewable energy as an integral part of the plan to restructure the power sector. Today, it is government policy to have at least 60-100 MW from wind by the private sector by 2013, and to have 12% from renewable energy by 2020. With the support of local municipalities in the Akkar region (Northern Lebanon), and the support of a number of international consultants and manufacturers of wind turbines, we have been able to complete a full pre-feasibility study. Hawa Akkar will now be able to commission the wind farm 18 months after receiving formal approval from the government of Lebanon. Our studies have confirmed the availability of wind in Akkar, and more importantly, that wind energy is competitive when compared with traditional forms of generation in the country, and where the average cost of the kwh is around 17.14 USC. We at Hawa Akkar, do not see wind as a replacement for conventional power, but rather as an integral part of a sustainable energy generation mix. We aim to invest private funds in one of the poorest areas in Lebanon to create much needed jobs,
