As a part of a day full of events on 08th February 2025, after completing the ImechE SAR annual meeting and SOfE SAR, an insightful talk was delivered by Prof. Siddartha Khastgir from the WMG, University of Warwick, UK, on “Creating Complex Systems: From Self-Driving Cars to Large Organizations”. The talk captivated a packed audience at the members' lounge of The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL). The event was organized by the IMechE Sri Lanka Group and was followed by fellowship and dinner. The IMechE Sri Lanka Group, with 1,350 members, continues to support the professional growth of Sri Lankan mechanical engineers since its inception in 1997.

The Speak Out of Engineering (SOfE) regional competition was held at The Institution of Engineers, Sri lanka(IESL) on 08th February 2025 afternoon. The country winners from India (Mr. Aham Sinha), Bangladesh (Mr. Sourja Das), Nepal (Ms. Ankita Bhattarai), and Sri Lanka (Ms. Thamalu Kumarasinghe) competed for a spot in the Global competition in Turkey this April. After an intense contest, Ms. Thamalu from the Kotelawala Defense University Student Chapter, who presented “Powering up the Tomorrow We Envision”, emerged victorious, earning her place in the global event. The runner-up was Mr Aham from India presenting on “Healing Earth – Fixing Climate Change”. ImechE SAR congratulates the winners and all the participants on their achievements and wishes them the best of luck for the upcoming global SOfE.

IMechE SAR convenes in Colombo, Sri Lanka

On February 8th, 2025, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Southern Asia Region (SAR) convened at the Sofia City Hotel in Colombo. Hosted by the IMechE Sri Lanka Group and the SAR panel, the meeting brought together delegates from India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. The speciality of this meeting was that it was the first time a Nepal representative attended the SAR meeting. The annual gathering reviewed the progress made in 2024 towards IMechE’s theme, “Improving the World through Engineering,” and discussed future initiatives that will shape the institution’s direction.
IMechE, a global professional organization representing the mechanical engineering profession with a membership of 115,000, is committed to continuous professional development. The Southern Asia Region, chaired by a Sri Lankan, is home to approximately 6,700 members and regularly organizes programs, competitions, and financial support to foster career growth.
