CeySapphires International

CeySapphires International Discover The World of Ceylon Sapphires And the Founder of the Company, Mr. Al-Haj A.W.M.

A family business founded in early 70s, spanning over two generations with four long decades of experience as a traditional Sapphire miner, dealer and exporter, CeySapphires International is one of the leading Trader providing variety of Colored Gemstones especially Ceylon Natural Sapphires. Our 48 years of humble and steady history began at China Fort, widely known as "Patte", a famous Gem Market

in Ceylon, located in Beruwala, just 100km far or two-hour travelling distance from The Gem Capital of the Island, Ratnapura. At late 70s, we were known as one of the leading suppliers of Geuda (a variety of Corundum, primarily found in Ceylon, of which color can be enhanced drastically with heat treatment) for buyers from Thailand, Singapore and Japan. Thowfeek earned the nickname, “Geuda Thowfeek Haji” (ගෙවුඩ තව්පි මුදලාලි) because of his deep knowledge about Geuda and the satisfied price he gave for each stone at that time (at a time where Geuda Stones were considered worthless and valueless). We mine Natural Sapphires from our own local gem mines and also purchase directly from the miners from all over the places of the Island including Elahera, Ratnapura, Eheliyagoda, Pelmadulla, Balangoda, Okkampitiya, Bibile, Passara, Hatton & Kanthale. The Fine Calibrated Natural Sapphires are exported to International Clients all over the world under the trade name “CeySapphires™”. We provide Natural Sapphires of all colors: Blue, Peach, Brown, Green, Pink, Yellow, Violet, White, Orange, Red (Ruby) and Pinkish Orange (Padparadscha/ King Sapphire). Amongst Blue Sapphires, we're specialized in various hues including Royal Blue, Peacock Blue, Vivid Blue, Cornflower, Pastel etc. And we provide Rare Sapphires like Star Sapphire, Star Ruby, Color Changing Sapphire and Bicolor Sapphire. Other than Sapphires, we provide Chrysoberyl including Alexandrite & Chatoyant varieties, Red & Cobalt Blue Spinel, Tsavorite Garnet, Bicolor & Tricolor Tourmaline. And also, we provide Rare Gemstones like Serendibite, Sinhalite, Ekanite, Korneruprene etc. Currently there are several licensed Sapphire mines in process with legal permissions from state authorities, NGJA. And the Company is very keen on environmental impacts of mining and always ensures the stones are conflict-free and mined in green & ethical ways. CeySapphires International is a Licensed Dealer of National Gem & Jewellery Authority, Lifetime Member of Gemmologists Association of Sri Lanka and Gemological Association of University of Moratuwa.

Did You Know?
Prior to the 1930s, Rubies were mysteries, arcane gems oft-confused with Spinel and other look-alikes.
The name "Ruby" comes from the Latin word ruber, which means “red.” The glowing red of ruby suggested an inextinguishable flame burning in the stone.
Similar to other precious stones, the quality of a Ruby is also determined by its color, cut, and clarity, which, along with carat weight, affect its value. The brightest and most valuable shade of red is called blood-red or pigeon blood.
Desire for Ruby is just as great today as it always has been. As a symbol of passion, emotion and love, Ruby makes an ideal choice for a romantic gift.

Gem cutting/ lapidary is another area in the trade where the traditional meets the modern in Ceylon. Centuries of experience in cutting and polishing continue alongside new technology and design models. The time-honored art of reading rough and orienting stones is integrated with the growing demand of the global market for exact calibration, well-balanced proportions and high quality polish.
Thus the Ceylonese lapidary industry consists of a fascinating blend of high-powered techniques, utilizing some of the world’s greatest expertise in the orientation of rough, and a growing precision cutting and re-cutting sector that maintains the strictest of tolerances.

Ceylon Sapphires are probably the worlds most famous and sought after Sapphires due to the color in the blues only second to the extremely rare Kashmir Sapphire.
Today Ceylon Sapphire's are the most sought after world wide by the top gem buyers and collectors the world over.
Marco Polo once wrote on a Visit to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) “I want you to understand that the island of Ceylon is, for its size, the finest island in the world, and from its streams comes rubies, sapphires, topazes, amethyst and garnet.”
Little has changed since Marco Polo’s time, Ceylon is a small pear shaped island off the Southern tip of India and because the quality of gem stones from Ceylon is still known as India's Jewel Box.
We have our own gem mines all over the Island (Sri Lanka/ Ceylon). Our hard working, loyal Gem miners always search for the finest of Sapphires in a array of colors from the richest of blues to the brightest of pinks the choices of colors we have found here covers ever spectrum of the rainbow.

The cut and polish on a Sapphire, or any gem stone, is extremely important. Sapphires are unique in the fact that the stone has an almost unlimited choice of cuts.
The majority of the Sapphires you find in the gem industry now are Oval, Round and Cushion cuts. However, here in Ceylon you will find a full range of different cuts, including some very unique fancy cuts.
Many gem stones are limited to the cuts they can have, depending on their natural crystal shape. For example, you will see many Tourmaline or Emerald’s taking on an Emerald Asscher or Square cut, this is due to the natural crystals which are formed in an elongated shape similar to an Emerald cut, which makes cutting the stone along the lines of the natural crystal much easier.
Sapphire crystals are formed as a hexagon shape (a crystal make-up). This not only allows for a much more diverse set of cuts, but also explains why these beautiful gem stones are so durable.
A clean gemstone that has been cut and polished to a high standard will return a larger percentage of light and glitter to the eye. It is called reflection in Gemology!
The polish of a Sapphire is also equally important. We always go to great lengths to ensure that every single Sapphire is cut and polished perfectly to meet our own high standards. We are very fortunate to have our own gem cutters widely known as Lapidarists here in Ceylon who are highly skilled with the faceting and polishing of Sapphires, Emeralds, Rubies and Diamonds and they're able to take a rough or a cut & polished Sapphire to the next level, creating a well cleaner cut, allowing for a much better finish, and ready for each custom jewelry setting and for international trading.
This stunning Blue Sapphire was mined in Elahera, Ceylon and facetted in Ratnapura, Ceylon. The 17.30 weighs, eye-clean stone is natural, means unheated and untreated. And the stone is certified by GIA and GRS. The Sapphire is well cut (cushion shape) with very good brilliance and faces up eye-clean. This is a rare, highly desirable Color (royal blue), Clarity (eye-clean), Cut (cushion) and Carat-weight (above 10 carats) of Sapphire.
