The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) was established on 12th August 1981, under the provision of the National Environmental Act No:47 of 1980. The Ministry of Environment which was established in December 2001 has the overall responsibility in the affairs of the CEA with the objective of integrating environmental considerations into the development process of the country.

The objectives of the CEA are
• Protect, manage and enhance the environment
• Regulate, maintain and control the quality of the environment
• Prevent, abate and control pollution

Energy can have derived from earth natural resources. These energy is called as renewable energy. Renewable energy is an alternative to the traditional energy that relies on fossil fuels. Solar, wind, hydroelectric are most important energy.

Solar energy is derived by capturing radiant energy from sunlight and then it converting into heat, electricity or hot water. Photovoltaic system can convert to direct sunlight into electricity using solar cell.
Sunlight is functionally endless using technology to harvest it , there is a limitless supply of solar energy. The solar energy helps to us improve public health and environmental conditions.

Wind energy is derived by energy floe turbines and then converting it into electricity. Wind energy is clean energy source. So it does not produce carbon dioxide or release any harmful products. Wind power is cost effective and sustainable. Investment of wind power technology can also open up new avenues for jobs.

Hydroelectric is a renewable energy derived from falling water. So it is emission free reliable. Hydro plant can adjust the flow of water. It allows the plant to produce more energy when it required or reduce the energy output when it isn’t needed.

Renewable energy sources are essential to sustainable energy as they generally energy security and emit less greenhouse gasses than fossil fuels.

The principles of sustainable development are conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity , Development of sustainable society and human resources , control of population growth, Promotion of public resources.

The importance of sustainable development is ,it encourages us to conserve and enhance our resource base by changing the way in which we develop and use technologies. Countries should be allowed to meet their basic needs of employment, energy , water, food and sanitation.

Human sustainablity, Economic sustainablity, Environmental sustainablity and social sustainablity are the different types of sustainable development.

There are main issues of sustainable development such as poverty, exclusion, unemployment, climate change, building strong institutions of governance, and supporting the rule of law.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is the assessment or measurement of impacts of any activities on the environment. EIA helps to determine the level of positive and negative effect of the proposed activity on environment and suggests relevant managerial actions to reduce the harmful effects. It’s important to promote safe environment, sound and sustainable development, by measuring environmental impact like to be caused by project.

The main purpose of EIA is to inform the decision makers about the possible impact of proposed activity before making the final decision. Therefore, EIA is also considered as a valuable input for decision making about the proposed activity.

EIA is done while conducting almost all sorts of activities such as building a dam, road construction, establishing industries, building power houses etc.

EIA conducting team includes people from diverse background who can make better and neutral decisions. Best-practice of EIA identifies environmental risks, lessens conflict by promoting community participation, inform decision makers, minimizes adverse environmental effects and help lay the base for environmental-sound projects. EIA is important instrument for facilitating sustainability.
