Driving Sri Lanka Towards Self-Sufficiency in Edible Oils 🇱🇰

We were honoured to welcome Mr. Shantha Ranathunga, Chairman, Coconut Development Authority, together with Mr. K.A.N.P. Kanugala, Director – Processing Development, for their annual official visit to Venkadeshwara Agro Industry Limited.

During the visit, we had meaningful discussions on the future of Sri Lanka's edible oil industry. It was highlighted that the country requires approximately 250,000 metric tons of edible oils annually, of which nearly 80% is met through imports, resulting in an estimated USD 300 million in foreign exchange leaving the country each year. This underscores the importance of expanding local production and strengthening Sri Lanka's self-sufficiency in edible oils.

The discussion focused on increasing local coconut production, while also exploring the role of sustainable palm oil refining and production in meeting the country's growing demand. As a leading player in the oils and fats industry, Venkadeshwara Agro Industry Limited shared its future development plans and commitment to contributing towards national food security through responsible manufacturing and investment.

Mr. Ranathunga and Mr. Kanugala offered valuable guidance and technical insights on advancing the industry, particularly by focusing on value-added products that can enhance Sri Lanka's competitiveness while creating greater economic opportunities. Their encouragement towards strengthening domestic production and promoting value addition reflects a forward-thinking vision for the country's agricultural and manufacturing sectors.
