Last week in Kandy, at the 16th International Conference on Sustainable Built Environment (ICSBE 2025), our Director represented the CTBUH Sri Lanka Chapter in a forward-looking discussion on Generative Design and Automation and what they truly mean for the future of structural engineering.

The discussion was about how the role of the structural engineer is evolving.

Key takeaways from the session:
• Structures today go beyond strength and safety
• KPIs such as time, cost, embodied CO₂, manpower, lifecycle cost, and accuracy are now integral to design
• Generative design is moving from theory to real-world structural workflows
• Automation is freeing engineers from repetition and elevating judgment, creativity, and decision-making
• The future engineer is becoming a hybrid professional
• And the key question: Will AI replace engineers?
