Australia’s first electrically driven passenger ferry is starting to take shape.

Currently under construction by Aus Ships, the vessel will feature a twin installation of the Volvo Penta IPS450E electric propulsion system – with the hulls now prepared for the IPS units that will help power a new era of passenger transport.

Delivering 250 kW per driveline, this first-of-its-kind configuration is designed to demonstrate how integrated electric propulsion can support efficiency, reliability and confidence in real-world commercial operations.

Commissioning is planned for Q4 2026, after which the vessel will be used as a demonstrator to generate valuable operational insights for the future of electric marine transport.
