From manual bottleneck to fully automated packaging flow

: how we increased packaging throughput by +33% while reducing manual labor by ~94 FTEs

In end-of-line operations, packaging often becomes a limiting factor for overall production efficiency. This was exactly the case in one of our recent projects.

The client’s process relied on manual handling and partial automation – limiting performance to 8–9 boxes per minute and requiring significant operator involvement.

The goal was to create a fully automated packaging process – from box forming to final sealing – while ensuring continuous flow, flexibility across formats, and reliable component handling.

We implemented an integrated solution combining automated box forming, vacuum conveying, robotic insertion, and hot-glue sealing – all synchronized into one continuous process without manual handoffs ⚙️

The result of the fully automated FEFCO 410 packaging line:
– Throughput increased from 8–9 to 12 boxes per minute (~+33%) 📈
– The solution reduced the need for manual labor by ~94 operators across shifts (based on ~6 operators per shift across 4 lines and 4 shifts) 👥

Beyond the numbers, the client gained a stable, continuous packaging process with significantly reduced manual intervention – removing a key bottleneck in their production flow.

Last week, a Software-Defined Automation event organized by Siemens took place at the VMG Technics R&D Industrial Innovation Park, bringing together representatives from a wide range of industrial companies.

This was the only event of its kind in Lithuania, and we were glad to contribute by hosting it and creating an environment where technology, practical examples, and professional discussion could come together in one place.

During the event, key topics related to industrial digitalization were presented and discussed, including Industrial Edge and its management, IIH Edge Apps, Performance Insight (OEE), the SIMATIC AX engineering environment, vPLC 1517, and AI solutions using Vision Connector and Basler cameras.

Participants also had the opportunity to experience practical demonstrations of Vision Inspection solutions and to see a miniature factory model in action. The model provided a clear and tangible way to demonstrate how automation, data, and AI solutions interact within a realistic production setup.

The base of the factory model was developed by fischertechnik, and further expanded by Siemens into a fully functional demonstration platform. In a compact format, it reflects the logic and structure of a real industrial production system.

At the start of a new year, it is a good time to look back on the achievements and milestones of the past one.

For VMG Technics, 2025 was an active and achievement-driven year, marked by strengthened partnerships, the development and implementation of advanced technological solutions, and important recognitions. The year was also notable for several meaningful anniversaries.

🤝 Global partnership
In 2025, VMG Technics officially became part of the global Lenze partner network as a Performance Partner System Integrator.

🏭 Industry recognition
The VMG Technics R&D Park was awarded Best Manufacturing and Logistics Facility in the “For Sustainable Development” competition organised by LNTPA.

🥇 National awards
At the national competition Lithuanian Product of the Year 2025, VMG Technics received two Gold Medals for an automated packaging robot cell and an automated honeycomb stacking and cutting line – solutions that deliver tangible improvements to manufacturing processes.

🏆 Regional recognition
During the Klaipėda District Mayor’s Appreciation Evening, VMG Technics was awarded the Business of the Year 2025 title, recognising the team’s contribution to innovation and consistent impact on regional economic growth.

🎉 Meaningful anniversaries
The year was symbolically crowned by two important milestones – 20 years of VMG Technics’ operations and the 1st anniversary of the R&D Park. Over two decades, the company has grown into a team of more than 400 professionals delivering high value-added automation, robotisation, and engineering solutions to clients worldwide.

2025 once again confirmed that the strength of VMG Technics lies in its people, technologies, and the ability to consistently turn ideas into successfully operating solutions.

Last week, VMG Technics welcomed representatives of Naval Group

During the visit, we introduced our team and shared how we work in practice – from industrial automation and robotisation to engineering solutions tailored to real production needs. The meeting also provided space for technical discussions and an exchange of perspectives on potential application areas.

🏆 We’re honored to share that two automation solutions developed by VMG Technics have been awarded Gold Medals at “Lietuvos metų gaminys 2025”, a national competition organized by the Lietuvos pramonininkų konfederacija.

Both solutions were recognized in the Machinery, Equipment, Electronics, and Electrical Engineering Industry category.

🥇 Automated Packaging Robot Cell - developed for furniture manufacturing, this solution automates component packing without interrupting the production flow.

Key highlights:
– Up to 15 boxes (30 parts) per minute
– Dual-stack configuration for handling different formats simultaneously
– Laser-based part recognition for precise robot trajectories
– Energy-efficient hydraulic system
– Reduced manual work and stable process quality

🥇 Automated Core Assembly & Cutting Line - a fully automated line for preparing and inserting reinforcement cores into box structures.

Key highlights:
– End-to-end automation – from material infeed to gluing
– Simultaneous processing of two formats
– Throughput of 15 boxes (30 cores) per minute
– Integrated hot-melt gluing and precise robotic placement
