🏢 More than 30,000 apartment buildings in Lithuania are still awaiting renovation. How can we accelerate the process?

Kaunas is taking an important step by offering its highest-rated projects compensation of up to 100% of construction costs, with additional priority given to district-scale and panel-based renovation.

Yet funding must go hand in hand with faster technologies. As Justinas Bortkevičius, Head of VMG Lignum Systems, highlights, panel-based renovation shifts more work to a controlled factory environment – improving quality, simplifying planning and reducing time on-site.

With pilot projects already underway in Vilnius and Utena, this model shows strong potential for renovation at scale.

🏗️ How can closer cooperation between the construction sector and the engineered timber industry transform the way we build?

This topic was discussed last Thursday at the extended Council meeting of the Lithuanian Construction Association (LSA), held at Akmene Free Economic Zone.

Sigitas Paulauskas, Founder and Sole Shareholder of VMG Group, presented the industrial transformation of Naujoji Akmenė – an ecosystem connecting engineered timber production, automation, circular economy principles and renewable energy.

“Engineered timber solutions should not be viewed as a replacement for traditional construction technologies, but as an additional opportunity for the market,” he emphasised.

Justinas Bortkevičius, Head of VMG Lignum Systems, presented how engineered timber systems can be applied in panel-based renovation and prefabricated construction. By shifting more processes to a controlled factory environment, these solutions ensure greater precision, consistent quality and shorter on-site installation times.

The event also included visits to the VMG Wood Solutions and VMG Lignum Construction production facilities.

VMG Lignum expertise featured in EUWID 🌍

We’re proud to see VMG Lignum featured in EUWID – one of Europe’s leading sources of industry intelligence.

The article presents Rietuva’s new €40.6 million prefabricated timber construction plant in Akmenė, designed to manufacture wall and ceiling elements for panel-based renovation and prefabricated construction projects.

VMG Lignum plays an important role across the project’s value chain: the technology behind panel-based renovation was developed by VMG Lignum Systems, while VMG Lignum Construction supplies the engineered timber products used in production. 🌲

With an annual capacity of around 360,000 m², the new facility creates a strong industrial foundation for more efficient and scalable timber construction and renovation solutions across Europe.

Lithuania is building the future of construction for Europe – but why are we still slow to adopt it at home?

Only around 1% of the LVL produced in Lithuania remains in the domestic market, while the rest is exported to countries where engineered timber construction is already more widely adopted.

According to Ramunas Grudis, CEO of VMG Lignum, the challenge goes beyond technology. Regulation, construction culture, market maturity and the way we assess project economics all play a role.

Lithuania already has the manufacturing capacity, expertise and international experience. The question is: when will the domestic market be ready to fully embrace it?

More projects. More progress. More proof that panel-based renovation works.

Over the past few months, our team has reached several important milestones as our panel-based renovation system continues to move from design into real-life projects across Lithuania.

Today, six pilot projects are already at different stages of implementation:

🏗️ Karmėlava – final works are underway.
🏗️ Utena, Taikos St. 62 – façade panel installation is in progress.
🏗️ Vilnius kindergarten "Justinukas" – façade panels are being installed.
🏗️ Vilnius, Tuskulėnų St. – installation has started on Lithuania's first panel-based renovation pilot for an apartment building.
🏗️ Vilnius, Antakalnio St. 91 – the first façade panels will be installed on 12 August.
🏗️ Utena, J. Basanavičiaus St. 106 – façade panel installation on another apartment building is planned to begin in September.

Every new project brings us one step closer to making panel-based renovation a standard solution for faster, cleaner and more sustainable building modernisation.

We are pleased to announce that Martynas Kupšys has been appointed CEO of VMG Lignum construction.

As of June 30, Martynas, who previously served as the company's Production Manager, has taken over the role of CEO.

Martynas brings more than 15 years of management experience in manufacturing, having worked in metal structures, shipbuilding and modular home production.

Having served as Production Manager, Martynas knows the company, its people and its operations well. We are confident that his leadership will ensure continuity while supporting the company's further growth and long-term objectives.
