🌾 Big news for Ethiopia’s agricultural future!

The construction of $2.5B Dangote Urea Fertiliser Project in Gode, Somali Region has begun this week. It will produce 3M tonnes of urea annually, reducing fertiliser imports, creating jobs, and boosting food security.

By harnessing Ethiopia’s natural gas resources, this public–private partnership between Dangote (60%) and Ethiopian Investment Holdings (40%) is set to make Ethiopia a fertiliser hub for East Africa.

A true milestone for sustainable growth and industrial transformation! 💪

🚢 The Arctic Shipping Shortcut: Game Changer or Risky Bet? 🌍
As melting sea ice opens northern waters, the Northern Sea Route (NSR) is emerging as a potential shortcut between Europe and Asia. But is it really a rival to the Suez Canal? Here’s a quick comparison:
Arctic Route (NSR)
✅ ~40% shorter (Rotterdam–Yokohama: ~13,000 km vs ~21,000 km)
✅ Transit time: 22–25 days (vs 35–40 days via Suez)
⚠️ Seasonal navigation, icebreaker support required
⚠️ Sparse infrastructure, higher insurance costs
⚠️ Controlled mainly by Russia, raising geopolitical concerns
Suez Canal Route
✅ Year-round, reliable, and established
✅ Mature logistics, port, and insurance networks
⚠️ Longer distance = higher fuel costs and emissions
⚠️ Vulnerable to chokepoint disruptions (remember the Ever Given?)
🌱 On paper, the Arctic shortcut saves time, money, and fuel. In practice, it remains a seasonal, risky, and environmentally sensitive route. Many major shipping lines are avoiding it despite the allure of shorter voyages.
👉 Do you see the Arctic route becoming a mainstream alternative—or will the risks outweigh the benefits?

India’s Fertilizer Shortages: Why Flexibility Matters 🌾⚖️

Some states in India are facing fertilizer supply crises — not always because of a lack of stock at the national level, but due to distribution delays and political pressures to ensure equitable allocation.
At the heart of the issue lies India’s subsidy and pricing policy. While subsidies protect farmers from volatile global markets, rigid price caps can suppress supply. When the real cost of imports (including shipping, raw materials, and exchange rates) exceeds the reimbursed subsidy, importers lose incentive to supply.

🔎 NPK Expert suggests that India must be more flexible with fertilizer pricing policies, otherwise shortages will persist.

👉 A scenario for India’s DAP (N18:P46) policy:
• Current: ~EUR 360,00 per tonne vs landed cost of ~EUR 675,00 → subsidy gap of EUR 315,00) per tonne (source Department of Fertilizers https://fert.nic.in/; World bank comodity price data www.worldbank.org, www.argusmedia.com)
• If the government modestly raises retail price by EUR 30,00/tonne and adds direct farmer support EUR 8-EUR 12/ha) the outcome changes:
o Farmers pay roughly the same net cost.
o Importers regain incentive to supply.
o Government spending becomes more transparent and targeted.

✅ NPK Expert suggest: More reliable fertilizer availability, less risk of shortages, and farmers still protected.
This is a balancing act between equity and efficiency. A hybrid system (slight price flexibility + direct benefit transfers) could ease India’s fertilizer crisis without hurting farmers.

Vessel "Lucky" departs Liepaja, Latvia en route to Conakry, Guinea

On May 2nd, the MV Lucky departed from the Port of Liepaja, Latvia and is currently sailing through the Baltic Sea, transporting a shipment of complex fertilizers destined for Conakry, Guinea.
The fertilizers will be used in smallholder and commercial farming, supporting the cultivation of diverse crops such as rice, sorghum, and cotton.
The total cargo volume amounts to approximately 10,000 metric tons of NPK 15-15-15 fertilizers. The cargo handling operations were overseen by LSEZ Terrabalt SIA. Upon completion of loading, the vessel is scheduled to make a stop at the Port of Las Palmas, Spain, for maintenance before continuing to its final destination in Conakry, Guinea.
Mr. Gorsvans, a representative of NPK Expert Iberia SL, noted that the fertilizer’s balanced nutrient profile is especially effective in enhancing yields for staple crops in the region.
The loading of the bulk cargo was completed in just three days—faster than initially anticipated — thanks to the efficient and professional work of NPK Expert Iberia SL and the port stevedores.
