At the beginning of May, together with Carine Magalhaes Leys, STRANDECK presented its 10-year BIM Journey experience at the PTI Conference in Long Beach, California.

It was a great opportunity to share real-world project experience, discuss lessons learned, and demonstrate how BIM can support better communication among engineers, designers, contractors, and site teams.

A big thank you to PTI for organizing the event, to Carine Magalhaes Leys for collaborating on this presentation, Artjoms Samarins, and Arturs Proskurovskis for presenting, and to everyone in the audience who joined the session, listened, asked questions, and contributed to the discussion.

Building design is often imagined as a linear process:
Architecture → Structural Design → Other disciplines

In reality, it’s never that simple.

A better analogy is a mechanism of gears ⚙️ — when the movement of one gear immediately affects the others.

- A shift in Architecture alters the Structure.
- A Structural adjustment impacts the budget.
- Economics dictates the final reality.

It’s a mechanism.
Every gear in the system affects the rest.

Success depends on how well the gears mesh together from Day 1.

We believe, communication is core requirement to make gears move together.

After dozens of value engineering sessions, we’ve learned a 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 and having fun along the way:

1️⃣ 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡 → Even a napkin doodle can save thousands.
2️⃣ Open 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 → Coffee and conversation often unlock ideas that emails never will.
3️⃣ 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 → Addressing a single zone or structural detail can significantly reduce complexity for the rest of the design.

𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 → You can always add value, even if the project is already on paper.

[END OF STRUCTURAL DESIGN]: Mozuriskiu g.2 project has reached a major milestone – the End of Structural Design & State Examination and Start of Construction

During this demanding phase we had to:
#1 Perform Calculations
#2 Solve Architectural challenges
#3 Provide Cost-Efficient Structural Design
#4 Coordinate solutions with the Construction team

➜ Now our focus shifts to the:
- Post-tensioning System Prefabrication & Delivery
- Post-tensioning System Installation, Stressing & Injection

🏗️ When drawings started turning into concrete and steel, our Latvian 🇱🇻 and Lithuanian 🇱🇹 engineering teams met the construction crews on-site in Vilnius to walk through the projects together.

Why do we think it’s crucial for engineers to meet on-site?

#1 Site feedback is the fastest design review you’ll ever get
#2 3D model feels different when it’s standing in front of you, made of concrete and steel
#3 It’s incredibly satisfying to walk through a project and say: “Yes, this detail survived reality.”

Projects are built by people, and good engineering gets even better when teams meet, talk, laugh, and argue next to the structure itself. 🙂

An old bridge, that experienced significant structural deterioration, now is fully back in operation:
