Ten years ago, Baltic Transocean Shipping & Crewing (BTSC) started doing business. It’s time to send out a big thank you to all seafarers, customers, partners and friends who supported and accompanied us along the way. This, of course, also applies to all of our colleagues at Northwest Competence, Fehn Ship Management and EMS-Fehn-Group. „It has been an exiting ride - full of great projects, some challenges and meeting many interesting people,“ says BTSC’s Office Administrator Elina Folkheima. She’s been with the company almost from the beginning. „We have a lot to be proud of,“ Elina says. „But I'm sure that there is even more to come."

Today is the Day of the Seafarer. It is celebrated each year to recognize the contribution that seafarers make to our everyday lives. Over the past 18 months, this contribution has been even more impressive: Hardly recognized by the public, seafarers were among those who were hit hardest by the Covid-19 pandemic. Unable to get home, hundreds of thousands of them were stranded on vessels way beyond their contracts. Numerous others had to wait ashore, unable to join vessels and support their families. Unfortunately, as Frank Coles points out in his recent editorial „And Still They Worked On . . .“ on gCaptain, this still goes on. We say thank you to all our crew and all the seafarers out there. EMS-Fehn-Group fully supports initiatives towards a .

Northwest Competence, member of the German EMS-Fehn-Group, has restructured itself internally in order to meet an increasing demand for ISO certifications and other services. At the same time, the company has given itself a new name. Founded in 2009, it was originally called Northwest Crewing. In the beginning, the team focussed on recruiting qualified seafarers for ship owners and managers. However, preparing other companies for ISO certifications soon became a second business field that steadily gained in importance. „We have adjusted our internal organization to this development by separating the business areas more clearly from another,“ says Northwest Competence’s managing director, Jens Feuerhake.

EMS-Fehn-Group has joined the international initiative to quickly resolve the worldwide crew change crisis by signing the „Neptune Declaration on Seafarer Wellbeing and Crew Change.“ Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, hundreds of thousands of seafarers have been stranded aboard vessels around the globe. With no chance of being relieved, they have to keep working beyond the expiry of their initial contracts. The extended periods at sea are detrimental to their health, causing fatique and an overall decrease in their physical and mental wellbeing. With the „Neptune Declaration,“ so far more than 500 companies and organizations worldwide seek to speed up efforts to resolve this international humanitarian crisis.
