Finally! We did it! 🥳 A historic decision has been made by the Cabinet of Ministers, which has approved new regulations to establish a clear and modern legal framework for transferring scientific research results to the economy.

☝ The new framework is intended to promote innovation, strengthen collaboration with businesses, and ensure more effective use of the value created by publicly funded research.

The framework establishes three main commercialization pathways:
🟣 Licensing intellectual property
🟣 Assigning or jointly exercising intellectual property rights, including contributing them as equity to a company’s share capital.
🟣 Establishing joint ventures.

The new regulations require every state scientific institution to establish clear internal procedures for the management and commercialization of intellectual property 🔬 Every scientific institution can choose the most appropriate development model for each invention or technology while ensuring the efficient use of public funds and compliance with European Union state aid rules.

The new framework is expected to improve cooperation between the research and business sectors, foster startup creation, increase the economic returns from publicly funded research, and promote innovation in fields such as information and communication technologies, healthcare, biotechnology, agriculture, and education 🤝

🇨🇦🇱🇻Canada is strengthening its long-term commitment to Latvia and NATO’s Eastern Flank.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canadian forces will remain in Latvia until 2031, with Canada’s contribution to the NATO-led multinational brigade increasing from approximately 2,200 to 2,600 soldiers.

Canada also confirmed it will join Latvia and Denmark as the third Framework Nation for NATO’s Multinational Division North, reinforcing regional defence, security, and allied cooperation.

This is also great news for UniLab Defence Accelerator. Through our close cooperation with NATO’s Multinational Division North, we look forward to further strengthening collaboration, supporting innovation, and contributing to defence capability development alongside our partners.

Together, we are building a stronger, more resilient security ecosystem for the Baltic region and beyond.

🌍 A major milestone for Latvia’s innovation ecosystem - Latvian-developed underwater technology is entering the global defence industry.

We’re excited to celebrate SUBmerge Baltic on the signing of its Memorandum of Understanding with Naval Group, marking an important step in the development of autonomous underwater systems and strengthening Europe’s defence capabilities.

The signing ceremony brought together representatives from Latvia’s government, defence sector, research institutions, international partners, and the innovation ecosystem, highlighting the growing strength of Latvian deep-tech.

Congratulations to our UniLab Elevate alumni, SUBmerge Baltic, on this remarkable achievement. It’s inspiring to see founders from our community reaching significant international milestones and demonstrating the global potential of Latvian innovation.

At UniLab, we remain committed to supporting both university-born innovation and ambitious founders through programmes like Elevate, helping transform bold ideas into globally competitive ventures.

A special congratulations to the SUBmerge Baltic and NAVAL GROUP teams, especially Karlis Berzins and Jérôme Sena, on this important milestone. We look forward to following your continued success. 🚀
