Libya’s exploration activity is gaining momentum, with new discoveries across both offshore and onshore areas highlighting growing upstream potential.

The المؤسسة الوطنية للنفط National Oil Corporation (NOC) and Eni announced a new gas discovery in offshore Block D, following recent exploration activity in the area. Located near existing infrastructure, the find can be developed efficiently through tie-backs, supporting faster integration into current production systems and reducing time to market.

In the Ghadames Basin, the NOC and Sonatrach confirmed a new oil and gas discovery, with early results pointing to strong production potential and reinforcing the basin’s role in future upstream activity.

Further south, the NOC and Repsol reported a new oil discovery in the Murzuq Basin, adding to ongoing exploration success in the region and strengthening Libya’s broader resource base across multiple basins.

Together, these developments reflect a clear direction. Activity is expanding, international partnerships are strengthening, and new opportunities are taking shape across Libya’s energy sector.

At Wazen Oil Services, progress like this translates into real work on the ground, where strong local presence combined with international standards, disciplined HSE practices, and reliable ex*****on enables projects to move forward safely, efficiently, and on schedule across Libya. Chevron’s renewed activity in Libya continues to take shape, with new steps that point to a longer-term commitment to the country’s upstream sector.

Last week, the المؤسسة الوطنية للنفط National Oil Corporation (NOC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chevron to conduct a comprehensive technical study of offshore Block NC146. The block remains largely unexplored, with encouraging geological indicators that could lead to significant discoveries and strengthen Libya’s national reserves.

This move builds on Chevron’s broader return to Libya, following its participation at the Libya Energy and Economic Summit (LEES) 2026 where it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Oil Corporation (NOC) to explore new opportunities after more than a decade away, and its successful bid in February for the onshore Sirte S4 exploration block as part of Libya’s first licensing round in nearly two decades, reinforcing its renewed and long-term interest in the country’s upstream sector.

For Libya, developments like this go beyond a single agreement. They reflect increasing confidence from international operators, support efforts to expand reserves, and align with the NOC’s direction to open new opportunities through future licensing rounds and offshore development.

At Wazen Oil Services, progress like this shows that attracting global operators is only part of the equation. Delivering value depends on consistent ex*****on, strong planning, and experienced local teams who understand the realities of operating safely and efficiently across Libya’s oilfields.

How important do you see offshore exploration playing in Libya’s next phase of production growth?

Libya’s exploration activity is gaining momentum, and developments in the Ghadames Basin are beginning to signal new upstream potential.

Recently, the National Oil Corporation (NOC) announced strong results from the B1-NC216A exploration well in Block NC216 in the Ghadames Basin, with flow rates exceeding 2,000 barrels per day. These results confirm the presence of highly productive reservoirs and open new opportunities for developing the area.
The outcome also points toward the potential to transform this block into a new producing field, adding to Libya’s existing asset base and supporting continued reserve growth.

For Libya, progress in the Ghadames Basin is significant. Expanding exploration in underdeveloped areas strengthens long-term production capacity, supports energy security, and reinforces the country’s position as a key energy supplier in the region.

At Wazen Oil Services, results like these show that exploration success is only the starting point. Turning discoveries into producing assets depends on consistent ex*****on, practical field planning, and skilled local teams who understand the realities of operating on the ground in Libya.

Libya’s gas sector is gaining new momentum, as recent offshore discoveries highlight the country’s growing role in regional energy supply.

This week, Eni announced two new offshore gas finds in Libya, with more than 1 trillion cubic feet of gas. These discoveries come after recent exploration near the Bahr Essalam field, Libya’s largest offshore gas field, which has been operating since 2005.

Because these new finds are close to existing facilities, they can be developed quickly by connecting to current offshore infrastructure. This makes production faster and more efficient.

The project is expected to move quickly into development, with gas set to supply the Libyan domestic market while also supporting exports to Italy, strengthening both local energy availability and international supply links.

For Libya, discoveries at this scale are significant. They help generate electricity, reduce pressure on local fuel supplies, and strengthen the country’s role as a reliable gas supplier to both regional and European markets.

At Wazen Oil Services, progress like this shows the value of strong local skills combined with international standards. Safe and efficient production depends on reliable work, strict Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) practices, and experienced field teams.

Libya’s upstream sector continues to regain momentum, and the restart of the Mabruk oil field signals steady progress in restoring production across the country.

Recently, TotalEnergies announced the restart of production at the Mabruk field in concession C17, located about 130 km south of Sirte, where operations had been suspended since 2015. A new early production facility with capacity of around 25,000 barrels per day began operating at the end of February, marking the return of one of Libya’s important producing assets.

For Libya, bringing fields like Mabruk back online supports national production targets, strengthens upstream capacity, and reinforces the operational backbone of the country’s oil and gas sector.

At Wazen Oil Services, milestones like this reinforce the importance of dependable field ex*****on, strong Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) practices, and local teams who can translate project plans into safe and efficient operations on the ground across Libya’s oilfields.

Across Libya, key oilfields and refining assets are returning to operation, marking steady progress in restoring the country’s energy infrastructure.

Over the past few weeks, the المؤسسة الوطنية للنفط National Oil Corporation (NOC) confirmed the restart of several important assets. The Sarir refinery, operated by شركة الخليج العربي للنفط - Arabian Gulf Oil Company (AGOCO), resumed gasoline production after nearly three years, restoring a refining unit that processes about 10,000 barrels per day and supports domestic fuel supply.

Upstream activity is also recovering. The Mabrouk oil field has returned to production with initial output of around 25,000 barrels per day, while the Sinoun oil field in western Libya has restarted after maintenance and operational upgrades.

For Libya, the restart of both refining and upstream assets strengthens energy security, improves fuel availability in the domestic market, and supports the broader effort to stabilise production across the country’s oil and gas sector.

At Wazen Oil Services, milestones like these reinforce the importance of strong local capability, disciplined HSE practices, and dependable field support as Libya’s energy infrastructure returns to sustained operation.

How important do you think restarting idle infrastructure will be for supporting Libya’s long-term production growth?
