Structural masonry and reinforced concrete are the most used structural systems in Brazil today, for building constructions (houses and buildings, mainly). And one of the fundamental points that differs between the two is how the loads travel through the building (which directly impacts its design). In reinforced concrete, the loads from the slabs are distributed to the beams, from the beams to the columns, and from the columns to the foundation. These are "bar" structures. And in structural masonry? As the name implies, the masonry is the structure itself. Therefore, the load from the slab discharges directly to the walls, and from the walls to the foundation (they are "plate" structures). In other words, there are no load peaks at specific points (as we have in the columns). This makes the requesting stress is relatively low (remembering that stress is the force divided by the resistant area, which in this case are the walls, and that they have a large resistant area).
