Anaemia means that the amount of red blood cells in the blood is too low. After medicine laureate George Whipple showed that the formation of blood cells among dogs was stimulated by a diet rich in liver, in 1926 George Minot and William Murphy adapted this finding for people who had pernicious anaemia. They were able to treat this previously fatal illness with a “liver extract”. Today we know that people with pernicious anaemia are deficient in vitamin B12 – which is readily found in liver.

After being awarded the ‎Nobel Prize in 1908‬, for his work on immunity, Paul Ehrlich announced his discovery of his ‘magic bullet’ – the first medicine that could cure syphilis – in April 1910.

The drug in question, called 606, as it was the 606th in a series of drugs investigated, had originally been set aside in 1907 for being ineffective. However Ehrlich decided to give it another try, asking his coworker to test the discarded drug on rabbits infected with the disease. To their delight it worked and, after some opposition, was cleared to treat syphilis in humans.
