This is a three-story extension building constructed for a government department in Nay Pyi Taw. During the construction process, there were many challenges, but the most remarkable incident was having to excavate and redo the footings. While carrying out the backfilling work, a truck accidentally hit and damaged two columns. Since the columns were still in the process of being reinforced, a slight bend occurred in the steel rods. When the department officials inspected the site and noticed this, they ordered the footings associated with those two columns to be excavated and completely redone.

Our company conducted all the necessary tests, including concrete grade tests and tests for the steel reinforcements, and the results were satisfactory. However, the department did not accept the tests and instead instructed us to demolish and rebuild the structure. Unfortunately, I wasn’t present at the site when this issue occurred, as I had been assigned to another department for tender-related matters. Resolving this issue required additional costs, but thankfully, the contractor responsible for the construction was exceptional. He was very diligent and personally took full responsibility for rectifying the problem.

To this day, I remain deeply grateful for his efforts. However, I still haven’t been able to find a strong reason why the department insisted on redoing the footings despite the satisfactory test results.

This project consists of two adjoining three-story buildings—one constructed as staff housing for the General Administration Department in Naung Cho, and the other as housing for retired military personnel in Myitkyina. Although the buildings are identical in design, the challenges faced varied depending on the company involved and the different locations. However, these projects remain memorable milestones in my engineering career.
