An article I wrote on Vaastu Architecture for the Insight Newsletter by the School of Practical Philosophy and Economic Science

Ben's interest in philosophy led him to explore Vaastu architecture. What could Vaastu architecture offer, beyond his western training?

Our team traces its lineage back to the Vishwakarma tradition and Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati, India's nationally recognized Shilpi Guru – a traditional architect and sculptor with the highest honours and contributions in the field.

Our mentor, Dr. Jessie Mercay, Vaastu Rathna, received her teaching largely on a one-on-one basis from Dr. Sthapati, and is now entrusted to carry forward this legacy, which is considered the world's prime authority on Vaastu Shastra, and his knowledge forms the bedrock of our practice.

Step 4: Building Design Principles

A Vaastu structure is a built form full of qualities of a vibratory nature which the resident benefits from through resonance.

In order to uphold and translate these vibrational qualities into a vibrant stable form Building design principles outlined in the Vastu Shastras are to ensure that the Vaastu effect is maintained and upheld whilst also providing all the architectural design requirements for modern day living.

The Vastu consultant uses these building design principles as a grammar to create a unique signature architectural piece that is functional, beautiful and spiritually satisfying.

Step 3: Calculations & Precise Measurement

“The Vaastu shastra enunciates that time-measure (Talam) is the fundamental scientific principle used for composing poetry, music, dance, sculpture and architecture.” Dr. V Ganapati Sthapati.

In practice, this Tálam is produced by the beat of foot in dance, the beat of palm in music and snapping of fingers in composition of poetry.

In building architecture of Sthapatya Veda (Vaastu architecture) Tálam measure is used to create rhythmic spatial forms. Such a building “vibrates from within, emitting wave patterns based on the rhythmic spatial order.”

During this step, a Vaastu consultant will perform a series of mathematical calculations in order to arrive at a unique building frequency which is compatible with all the residents of the house and full of vibrational qualities that will contribute to a positive Vaastu effect. Once a building frequency is established the Vaastu consultant will convert this frequency (Rhythm & Vibration) into spatial units (Space & Form).

“Architecture is frozen music and the zenithal achievement of mathematics” - Dr. V Ganapati Sthapati.

Thereby a harmony between built space and human rhythm is established by the traditional architects. In the Vastu Tradition, this process is called Ayadi Gananam - Measures of Spiritual Peace and Comfort

“The harmonious resonation of the wavelength of the building with that of the inhabitant is the main aim of Ayadi Gananam.” Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati

Step 2: Orientation & Building Alignment

Placement of a building in alignment with the cardinal directions (True North, True South, True East and True West) with minor adjustment called deflection is essential for activating a positive Vaastu effect.

“To benefit from the energy grid of the earth, the grid plan of the building should be made to rest on the earthly grid, congruently as well as oriented to the cardinal directions, whereby the flow of positive energy is made available to the indweller” - Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati

A certified Vaastu consultant understands the importance of building orientation as a foundational pillar responsible for the Vaastu effect. Thus, early in the design process when a site is being selected, it must be selected such that the building can be oriented along the cardinal directions

Step 1 - Site Selection:

Site selection is one of the earliest and most important decisions on any Vaastu Project. A Vaastu project can not be constructed on any site but must be meticulously chosen to a prescribed standard as if one were planting a seed in fertile ground.

"The selection of a site surrounded by a healthy environment of physical and spiritual nature is a key feature of Vastu Technology"

A certified Vaastu Consultant will assist the client in this process and help them select and evaluate various plots and sites prior to the purchase of the land and commencement of the project.

Some considerations include:

1. Type of land
2. Quality of soil, water and vegetation
3. Shape of plot
4. Slope of land
5. Location of site

How to create the Vastu Effect? ✨

There are five key components which need to be sequentially implemented by the Sthapati (Vastu Architect).

These are:

1. Site Selection
2. Building Orientation & Alignment
3. Mathematical Calculation & Proportionate Measure
4. Building Design Principles
5. Room Placement & Functionality

The Vastu Design process can be summarized into three steps. Firstly, how to create the Vastu Effect, secondly, how to uphold the Vastu Effect and thirdly how to live in harmony with the Vastu Effect.
