An electrical distribution board can look perfectly normal while a connection inside is overheating. That is why we believe basic thermal imaging should form part of every electrical distribution inspection, wherever safe access and suitable operating conditions allow.
A thermal scan under representative load can reveal unusual heating associated with poor connections, overloaded conductors or deteriorating components—sometimes before visible damage develops. It also helps identify where further investigation should focus.The benefits are practical:
✅ Earlier identification of developing problems.
✅ Clearer evidence to support maintenance recommendations.
✅ Recorded images for comparison during future inspections.
However, taking a thermal image is only the beginning.
Results need competent interpretation. Load, reflections, surface properties and normal equipment heating all affect what the camera shows. A hot spot needs investigation; its colour alone does not establish a fault.
Thermal imaging complements visual inspection and electrical testing. A cool board under light load cannot demonstrate how it will behave during peak demand.
Our view is simple: a basic thermal survey adds valuable information about an installation while it is operating. That deserves a routine place in the inspection process.
