While a dedicated Mode 3 wall charger remains the preferred solution for regular and long-term EV charging, there are situations where charging from a standard 13 A socket is necessary.

In such cases, it is good practice to use a BS 1363 EV-rated socket outlet rather than a standard BS 1363 socket. These sockets are specifically designed and tested to withstand the prolonged continuous loads associated with EV charging, helping to reduce the risk of overheating.

The photographs below show a common but potentially dangerous hidden defect found during an inspection of a distribution board.

At first glance, the termination may appear acceptable. However, the conductor has been clamped onto the PVC insulation rather than the bare copper conductor. This creates a poor electrical connection that can lead to: High contact resistance, Excessive heating, Arcing, Intermittent faults, Damage to electrical equipment, An increased risk of electrical fire. Defects like this are often concealed inside distribution boards and remain unnoticed until overheating or a failure occurs.

Regular inspection, testing, and maintenance of distribution boards can identify these hidden defects before they become a serious safety hazard. Correcting faulty terminations, tightening connections to the manufacturer's specified torque, and verifying the integrity of protective devices are all essential parts of preventative maintenance.

If your distribution board has not been inspected for several years, consider having it professionally inspected and tested. Preventative maintenance is far less costly than repairing the damage caused by an electrical fire.
