This August, the Ecostack Innovation team came together to advance RELATE4NATURE, a groundbreaking project that redefines how we value and integrate nature into decision-making. By co-developing tools, methods, and pathways, we’re breaking barriers in agriculture, energy, urban planning, and ecological guardianship, ensuring that relational, instrumental, and intrinsic values of nature are at the heart of systemic change.

From AI-guided spatial tools to immersive environments and serious games, we’re creating pathways to embed governance, finance, and legal strategies that prioritize biodiversity and climate action.

Because the future isn’t just about what we take from nature, it’s about how we relate to it. 🌍✨

🌿 World Nature Conservation Day reminds us that protecting nature is about the everyday actions that create an interconnected ecosystem of care.
Just like ecosystems, conservation thrives when different elements work in harmony. At Ecostack Innovations, we follow this same ecosystem‑based approach through our projects:

🐝 EPIC BEE and BEEPOLL focus pollinator conservation
🦎 HerpTrust raises awareness about the importance of conserving reptiles and amphibians
🌳 Through our Nature Restoration activities we have been working with local stakeholders to revitalise degraded land by planting native species for pollinators and other wildlife.

🧩 Each initiative is a piece of the larger conservation puzzle: connected, collaborative, and impact‑driven. Every effort becomes part of a wider system that keeps our planet resilient. Today is a reminder that conservation is not a one‑time act, it’s a continuous, collective ecosystem we all contribute to. 👏 What an engaging workshop on Wednesday! “Working Together for Nature and Climate” brought together thoughtful insights and inspiring local action

Dr Mario V. Balzan opened the event with an introduction to GREEN TALENT project and the Hub, followed by compelling studies showing that Nature‑Based Solutions should consider the heterogeneity of islands. His reflections on biodiversity, urban planning, digital NBS, and ecosystem-service capacity were especially valuable.

Friends of the Earth Malta then showcased practical projects across climate, mobility, zero waste, food, agriculture and biodiversity — sparking strong interest and support from participants. Their actions span from the ground up - community gardens to the sea - Pro-Coast Case Studies, and to digital solutions like the FoodConnect app.

Thank you to everyone who joined. Collaboration across public, private, NGO and citizen communities is essential as we build capacity and develop systemic solutions for the climate and biodiversity crisis.

Only 2.4% of Malta’s coastline consists of sandy beaches, making these ecosystems among our most valuable and vulnerable natural assests.

Last week, Ecostack Innovations was pleased to attend the opening Stakeholders' Meeting of the project, joining experts from across Malta and Sicily to discuss the future of coastal resilience.

The open discussions highlighted the importance of combining environmental data, scientific evidence and cross-sector collaboration to better understand coastal systems and support informed decision-making.

At Ecostack Innovations, we believe environmental intelligence is key to addressing complex sustainability challenges. Through environmental monitoring, Earth observations and data-driven solutions, we are committed to helping organisations make more informed decisions and build resilience for the future.

We look forward to continuing to support evidence-based approaches that strengthen the resilience of Malta's natural environment.

We’re excited to invite organisational stakeholders across academia, industry, public and civil society in to contribute to a research and innovation (R&I) study within the EU‑funded GREEN TALENT project.

Our project is conducting a survey to better understand organisational capacities, knowledge gaps, and future needs in research and innovation (R&I) related to climate change and biodiversity. Your insights will directly shape new ‑building initiatives, training programmes, and practical resources tailored to the needs of organisations working on the green transition

👀 What’s involved?

A 35‑minute questionnaire covering internal R&I processes, capacity gaps, partnership, compliance, and the importance and impact of R&I activities

✅ Why participate?

Your input will help calibrate the upcoming Needs Assessment Tool (NAT)—an ‑access resource that will allow your organisations and others to benchmark their readiness for climate and biodiversity‑related R&I. The tool will be made available through the GREEN TALENT Capacity-Building Platform

As an inspiring week in Galway, Ireland came to a close last week, the SELINA (Horizon Europe)'s consortium partners explored a key question:
How can evidence on ecosystem condition and services better support private-sector decision-making?

Over the past few days, participants shared insights on how ecosystem evidence is generated and used by businesses, identifying both the barriers to uptake and the opportunities to make scientific knowledge more accessible, practical, and relevant to real-world decisions.

The workshop also provided an opportunity to:
🌿 Exchange lessons from SELINA's Demonstration Projects to help shape the project's Compendium of Guidance.
🤝 Strengthen the connection between scientific innovation and private-sector needs, ensuring SELINA's research can better support organisations in making nature-positive decisions.
💬 Foster valuable discussions and collaboration between researchers and practitioners working at the science–business interface.

As the workshop concludes, the ideas, experiences, and connections built will help inform practical guidance that supports stronger integration of biodiversity and ecosystem evidence into business decision-making.

🌡️ 🏗️ Climate change is already affecting how we design and plan infrastructure. As extreme weather events become more frequent, climate proofing is becoming an essential part of creating infrastructure that is resilient, sustainable, and fit for the future.

At Ecostack Innovations we support public authorities, businesses, and organisations by assessing how climate change could affect their projects and identifying practical measures to reduce these risks. As part of this work, we have supported national authorities in climate proofing new public infrastructure, including healthcare facilities currently under development.

⛈️ Climate proofing considers future climate hazards such as rising temperatures, flooding, water scarcity, and extreme weather events to ensure that infrastructure remains functional and resilient throughout its lifetime. Depending on the project's needs, adaptation measures may include nature-based solutions, sustainable drainage systems, green infrastructure, passive cooling strategies, flood resilience measures, and resource-efficient technologies.

By integrating climate adaptation into project planning and design from the outset, infrastructure can be better prepared for future climate conditions while supporting long-term sustainability and resilience.

🏝️ Small and medium-sized islands (SMIs) are biodiversity hotspots facing disproportionate threats from climate change, environmental degradation, and socio-economic pressures. At the SMILES COST ACTION conference held in Brussels this week, we joined global experts to advance integrated, data-driven solutions for island resilience, helping to ensure these unique ecosystems and communities thrive for generations to come.

The SMILES COST ACTION project is a groundbreaking initiative focused on interdisciplinary research into ecosystem services and sustainability in SMIs. By fostering international collaboration, we're developing tools, guidelines, and nature-based solutions tailored to the complexities of island systems. The goal is to bridge the gap between science, policy, and practice, empowering islands to build sustainable, resilient futures.

📰 A key highlight of our participation was presenting the SMI-NbS Compendium (link: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-025-06476-6), a global dataset of 280 Nature-based Solutions (NbS) case studies from SMIs worldwide. This work reveals critical insights into trends, governance models, and ecosystem-specific opportunities, whilst highlighting the need for equitable and inclusive approaches to NbS implementation in SMIs to achieve a wide range of co-benefits for both people and biodiversity.

Islands are not just canaries in the coal mine; they are laboratories for innovation. Through projects like SMILES, we're turning challenges into opportunities and ensuring island communities can lead the way in climate action. 🌍
