We provide policy support, and work with practitioners to promote evidence-based implementation of greening measures and nature-based solutions.

🌿 Wrapping up last week’s meeting and officially kicking off our 4‑year journey with RELATE4NATURE (Horizon Europe)!

RELATE4NATURE aims to drive systemic and sustained transformations in socio-economic systems, ecological governance, and human–nature relations, all to secure a biodiversity-positive, climate-resilient, and socially just future.

How will we achieve this?
✴️ Cross‑sectoral partnership of 21 organisations across Europe, Ecuador, and New Zealand
✴️ 7 work packages covering policy evaluation, systematic review of barriers and enablers, co‑design of pathways, instruments and alternative models
✴️ Local pilot alliances serving as platforms and testbeds for alternative socio‑economic models
✴️ An International Knowledge Exchange Network to scale up these models globally

Last week’s kick‑off meeting brought our partners together to align visions, refine our collaborative approach, and set the foundation for the work ahead.
A special thank you to Project Officer, Rosalba Nardelli and Policy Officer Fleur van Ooststroom- Brummel for setting the scene and delivering an inspiring message that energised the entire consortium, to the Advisory Board members: Prof Maria Tengö, Prof B L Turner II, Prof Jasper Kenter, Ms Aurélia Blin, and particularly Dr Kati Vierikko who made it all the way to Malta to support the consortium discussion. A big thanks also to Prof Marco van de Wiel, the coordinator of the sister project SPARK4B+.

🌿 Biodiversity loss — the decline in the variety of species is driven by many pressures: urban expansion, climate change, over‑exploitation of natural resources, invasive species, and more.

But positive actions create positive change: planting native species, restoring small patches of habitat, or integrating nature‑positive planning in urban areas all contribute to slowing this crisis.

Ecostack Innovations brings experience in ecology, natural resource management, and environmental monitoring. We connect people, private entities, and local organisations to design and implement nature restoration projects that create long‑term ecological value.

Capacity is built both within organisations and through engagement with the wider ecosystem.

At Ecostack Innovations, we actively participate in external events to strengthen our scientific, research and innovation capabilities, as well as our project management skills. Last week, our team attended the Horizon Europe Implementation Event organized by Xjenza Malta

This is particularly important as we coordinate EU‑funded initiatives: GREEN TALENT project working with partners across Europe to strengthen capacity and collaboration for systemic climate and biodiversity solutions. We are also kicking off RELATE4NATURE (Horizon Europe), advancing a relational biodiversity economics approach to scale socio-economic models for biodiversity restoration and community resilience to climate change.

Together, these efforts help us grow as a research and innovation entity while contributing to a broader European R&I landscape focused on transformative change.

Navigating the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the European sustainability reporting standards (ESRS) requirements can be challenging. For many organisations, the past years have felt like trying to build a reporting system while the rules were still being updated.

With the Revised ESRS and the Voluntary Standard (VS) now adopted, the landscape is shifting once again. Companies, whether already reporting or not yet subject to mandatory regulation, are strongly encouraged to take the time to familiarise themselves with these updates. For SMEs and undertakings with fewer than 1,000 employees, starting with the Voluntary Standard can be an effective way to build internal readiness and gradually strengthen sustainability reporting practices.

This week, our team is delivering and receiving intensive Vector Surveillance Training as part of the Provision of Services for the Establishment of Vector Surveillance in Malta project.

The training brings together practical fieldwork, mosquito and sand fly trapping, QGIS and spatial analysis, laboratory techniques and morphological species identification, as well as an introduction to pathogens of public health importance and pathogen surveillance.

The programme has been organised by Ecostack Innovations in collaboration with the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing, with our team also contributing sessions alongside experts from the Leibniz Universität Hannover, Leibniz-Institut für Virologie (LIV), Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and Dr Francis Schaffner
We are pleased to bring together expertise from different fields and institutions to strengthen Malta’s capacity for vector monitoring and public health surveillance.

🌳 📹 Smart technology is boosting conservation capacity – Majjistral Park’s team shows how:

In our latest interview, CEO Darren Saliba explains how MAMBO technology is transforming their work in Malta’s vital protected area. With only three staff, traditional monitoring is a huge challenge, but automated pollinator cameras are helping to increase streamline data collection, improve monitoring capacity, and provide valuable insights into biodiversity.

The devices capture a wide range of pollinator activity, from honeybee activity in the midday heat to bumblebee morning foraging, while also revealing changes in pollinator visits as thyme flowers begin to fade. With minimal maintenance, these technologies are supporting more efficient and consistent biodiversity monitoring.

With the right support, these tools could redefine how we monitor and protect fragile ecosystems. 🌿🐝
