Balzan | WIP

A work in progress nearing completion.

Behind a modest entrance, the house opens into a bright garden volume shaped around negative space, light and landscape. The new L-shaped intervention hugs the perimeter of the site, allowing the garden to remain the focal point rather than residual space.

The project moves from compression into openness — balancing enclosure, height, greenery and contemporary insertions alongside the existing limestone fabric and traces of its original hand craftsmanship.

Final finishes, landscaping and façade restoration are still underway. Looking forward to revealing the completed project soon.

Rehabilitation of a Vernacular Farmhouse | Siggiewi

Historic farmhouses are layered buildings — once homes, animal rooms, storage spaces, and working structures forming a rural microcosm within the Maltese landscape.

This proposal explores how such buildings can be carefully adapted for contemporary living while safeguarding their identity.

The original vernacular volumes remain intact and clearly legible. The former dwelling and the agricultural animal rooms — historically distinct in function — are proposed to operate as a unified residence. A floating linking element is introduced between the two structures, enabling continuity without altering the integrity of either historic volume.

The intervention is intentionally contemporary to preserve clarity between old and new. The limestone massing, proportions, and rural street façade are retained and restored. From the public realm, the farmhouse remains unmistakably vernacular.

Within the courtyard, a north-facing glazed plane introduces controlled light and passive environmental performance, positioned away from the street and oriented toward the private landscape. Development is clustered around the existing footprint, maintaining the surrounding agricultural land undisturbed.

Grateful to our committed team for the rigour and care invested in this project, and to our clients for the trust placed in us to navigate the balance between heritage and contemporary life.

One of the unexpected joys of our site visits is meeting the real critics — the pets who’ve already chosen their favourite corners.

While wrapping up the final snags at a recently completed home, we noticed the family cat had claimed a little lookout spot beneath the mesh stairs we designed in the courtyard. From there, he peers down into the basement — quietly observing, completely at ease.

Moments like this remind us that no matter how much thought goes into a design, it’s the way people (and pets) live in the space that truly completes it.

We’re thinking of sharing more of the animals we meet on our projects — they’ve become an unexpected and much-loved part of our journey.

MCMXXVIII — the year Gustavo R. Vincenti built this architectural landmark. Nearly a century later, in 2025, it enters a new chapter.

We are honoured to be restoring and renovating this scheduled building, carefully preserving Vincenti’s original vision while preparing it for the decades ahead. Built in 1928, reborn in 2025.

Earlier this week, our own Tias Camilleri De Marco represented Paul Camilleri & Associates at SHAREarchitects Malta, delivering a talk titled:
“Silent Interventions: Designing for Legacy, Luxury, and Load.”

The presentation explored three of our most technically demanding and culturally sensitive projects:
🔹 The adaptive restoration of Kunvent ta’ Santu Wistin
🔹 The structural and programmatic synthesis behind Iniala Harbour House
🔹 And the civic-scale balance of Hyatt Regency Malta, designed in dialogue with the historic St. Rita Chapel

Matias was also formally welcomed into the SHARE Society, recognising his growing contribution to architectural discourse both in Malta and beyond.

The event brought together an extraordinary group of architects, planners, and thinkers whose work continues to shape the built environment across Europe and beyond—among them influential professionals such as Peter Murray OBE, Laura Narvaez Zertuche (PhD), Alexandra Virlan, Manuela Gatto, Andre Pizzuto, Ray De Micoli, Kerem Yazgan, Sergiu C. Petrea, Greta Tresserra, Jeanette M. Muñoz Abela, Alkis Dikaios, and Nicolas Pomränke from gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects—whose UM BAU philosophy resonates strongly with our own practice’s values of civic clarity and timeless form.

We also extend our sincere thanks to Florin Mindirigiu and the entire SHARE Architects team for curating a truly inspiring event that far exceeded expectations.

At PCA, we remain committed to the belief that architecture’s greatest strength often lies in its quietest gestures.

A quiet ode to 70s domesticity.
Brown porcelain tiles softened with time, floral wall motifs in sepia tones, a sturdy timber cabinet, and that crisp white upper wall—together, they hold a kind of subdued elegance.
Not loud. Not trying. Just… honest. And somehow, exquisite.
