ESCOM Takes Safety Education to Schools Across Central Region

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited has taken electricity safety awareness campaigns to primary schools across the Central Region, equipping learners with knowledge on how to prevent electricity-related accidents.

Speaking at Khungwa Full Primary School in Mchinji on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, ESCOM Central Region Safety Officer Maxwell Silla said children were particularly vulnerable to electricity-related dangerous occurrences.

He warned learners against approaching fallen electricity poles and low hanging live wires, especially during the rainy season, urging them to report such hazards to responsible authorities.

Silla also cautioned against unsafe household practices, including using boosters to charge phone batteries, which can explode and cause serious injuries or death.

He encouraged learners to share the safety messages with their families and communities to help prevent electricity-related accidents.

Lucy Bauleni, a Standard 7 learner at Khungwa Primary School, commended ESCOM for the initiative, saying she had learnt about the dangers of touching electrocution victims and climbing trees whose branches are in contact with electricity wires.

Other schools reached in Mchinji include Ludzi Girls, Bua, Tembwe Full Primary, Guilleme Boys Catholic and Holy Cross. ESCOM plans to extend the initiative to Salima and other districts across the country.

Minister of Energy Honourable Dr. Mathanga tours Chichiri Power Station, handles customer calls at the Call Centre

The Minister of Energy, Honourable Dr. Jean Mathanga (MP), visited the Chichiri Power Station of the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited in Blantyre on Wednesday, 21st October 2026. The visit underscores her commitment to ensuring the Corporation fulfils its mandate of providing reliable power to the nation.

During the visit, the Honourable Minister toured the National Control Centre and National Contact Centre to assess operations first-hand. She also interacted with the technical team and engaged engineers on critical issues concerning national power supply.

Speaking during the visit, Honourable Mathanga commended the technical team for their dedication and urged them to maintain high operational standards in faults clearing and handling customer queries.

The highlight of the tour saw the Minister, who was accompanied by Principal Secretary Elvis Thodi, taking time off to handle customer calls at the National Contact Centre to appreciate the process of handling customers.
