EMPOWERING MALAWI'S GIRLS IN STEM AT NKULA POWER STATION

On 5 August 2026, we welcomed female secondary school students from across the country to Nkula Power Station as part of the Malawi University Of Science and Technology's (MUST) Girls' Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Camp.

Guided by our engineers, the students toured the intake, powerhouse, control rooms and switchyards, gaining firsthand experience of how electricity is generated.

The visit provided an inspiring opportunity for the girls to explore careers in STEM and learn what it takes to succeed in these fields.

EGENCO Board Impressed with Progress of Nanjoka Solar Power Plant

As the commissioning date for the 10-megawatt (MW) EGENCO Nanjoka Solar Power Plant in Salima draws closer, the Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) Board of Directors, led by Board Chairperson and Chief Secretary to the Government, Dr. Justin Saidi, on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, visited the project site to assess the progress of works.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Saidi expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and commended the project team for their dedication.

“I am very impressed with the work so far and the progress we have made. This is a landmark project for the Government, and I wish to encourage you to ensure that by the end of this month we have the plant supplying power to the national grid. Keep on doing the good work,” said Dr. Saidi.

On his part, EGENCO Chief Executive Officer, William Liabunya, assured the Board Chairperson and members of the Board that the project remains on schedule and will be completed within the agreed timeframe.

“I wish to assure you, Board Chairperson and members, that by the end of this month, the project will be completed and supplying power to the national grid. We are currently finalizing commissioning tests with engineers from China and are also conducting Senior Authorization processes with industry partners in readiness for the commercial operation of the plant,” said Liabunya.

Financed by EGENCO’s own resources, the 10MW Nanjoka Solar Power Plant marks the first phase of EGENCO's ambitious 50MW solar power project. Preparations for Phase Two, which will add an additional 40MW to the grid, are already underway, with the process of engaging a consultant to undertake a feasibility study currently in progress.

Once operational, the plant is expected to contribute significantly to Malawi's electricity generation capacity and support the government's efforts to enhance access to reliable and sustainable energy.
