We are excited to host Bénédicte KUNTZIGER, the support, trainer, and community engagement lead at HAL. HAL is managed by CCSD - Centre for direct scientific communication.

She will be speaking on the topic: HAL, the French national open archive within the global Open Science ecosystem, an African perspective.

During the session, Bénédicte will guide attendees through the following:
- Introduction to the multifunctional French Open Archive, HAL, and key factors driving its expansion
- HAL functionalities and services for researchers, research communities and institutions
- Ways to access content on HAL
- How HAL bridges between the anglophone and francophone research communities
- Interoperability in HAL to connect research items across repository systems
- Collections on HAL that are of particular relevance to African researchers

We are excited to welcome Susan Veldsman, the Director of the Scholarly Publication Unit at the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF), as our guest speaker.

In this session, Susan will be speaking on the topic: Building a Trustworthy Research Environment: Challenges and Solutions to Predatory Publishing.

Predatory journals are motivated by profit rather than scholarship, soliciting articles and abstracts from researchers through actions that exploit the pressure on researchers to publish and present their work to their peers.

Through presentation and discussion mode, the session will ignite conversations around the following themes:
-Introduction to predatory journals
-What constitutes predatory and unethical publishing behaviour
-Root causes of this behaviour
-Prevalence and impact of predatory and unethical publishing practices
-Systemic drivers of predatory and unethical publishing practices
-The impact of predatory publishing on the African research ecosystem.
