The Ban and The Gains!
The Ministry of Trade has officially listed scrap metal on the restricted exports list (March 2025), reinforcing its commitment to protecting local industries. This follows the temporary six-month ban in May 2023, which aimed to curb vandalism. Similar steps have been taken in South Africa (November 2022) to combat metal theft by eliminating the market for stolen materials.
Why This is Great News for Steel Manufacturers!
More Affordable Raw Materials – Scrap metal prices are expected to drop, making it easier for manufacturers of steel products to access materials for recycling.
-Lower Production Costs – With cheaper scrap metal available, steel recycling and production costs will decrease.
-Increased Profit Margins – Lower costs allow businesses to remain competitive and grow profits.
-Reduced Metal Theft – Without an export market, stolen metal becomes less valuable, discouraging theft.
-More Demand for Steel Products – As metal prices drop, more people will prefer metal over wood, reducing deforestation.
For welding and fabrication businesses, which have been struggling with soaring raw material costs, this will usher in a perfect time to expand production and maximize growth. With the market stabilizing by this move, steel workshops should prepare for better pricing and increased opportunities!
