Did you know that the first cord blood transplant was done more than 30 years ago? The recipient was a 5-year-old boy with Fanconi anaemia (2015, Parent’s Guide to Cord Blood). This successful transplant had shifted the world’s interest to cord blood stem cells. Although globally the interest has always been higher, stem cell banking is still an alien topic in Malaysia even up until 2001, when StemLife was founded. How exactly did the two founders of StemLife, who happened to be such powerful women, make StemLife known to Malaysians just a few years after the establishment?😍 This International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the success and career development of these two founders together with the rest of StemLife’s women workers in forging innovation😎
StemLife is a biotech company that was founded by Dato’ Low Su-Shing and Dato’ Christina Lim Oi Wah in 2001. Dato’ Sharon and Dato’ Christina Lim were 34 and 56 years old respectively when they were appointed as Executive Directors. They took the opportunity to set up a company in a very niche industry yet very crucial for the advancement of science, technology and healthcare in Malaysia. These women embraced the challenges in pioneering the cord blood preservation and stem cell technology industry, with StemLife being the first private cord blood bank licensed by the Ministry of Health💪😍. StemLife became very successful with 5000 UCB stored in only 4 years after establishment and was awarded the Bionexus status in 2006🌟
