Faizzul shared insights on transforming today’s talent into tomorrow’s industry leaders and highlighted SMD Semiconductor’s role in driving Sarawak’s tech landscape forward. His core message: step up with courage—the future of semiconductors is in our hands.

The 38th International Conference on Microelectronics (ICM) is coming to Kuching from 7-10 December 2026. This is the first time in over 30 years that this global conference is returning to Malaysia!

Our Head of Project Management, Priscilla Annabel Bisop represented our CEO, Shariman Jamil, at the official press conference today alongside the Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Sarawak, YB Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

As an official partner, we are excited to welcome 300+ of the world’s top microelectronics researchers, engineers and industry leaders straight to Kuching. This is a massive step forward for our local talent research ecosystem and Sarawak’s Semiconductor Roadmap 2030.

Persidangan Mikroelektronik Antarabangsa (ICM) Ke-38 bakal berhimpun di Kuching pada 7–10 Disember 2026! Selepas lebih 30 tahun, persidangan berprestij ini akhirnya kembali ke tanah air, dan Sarawak dipilih sebagai tuan rumah tahun ini.

Hari ini, Ketua Pengurusan Projek kami, Priscilla Annabel Bisop, telah mewakili Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif (CEO) SMD Semiconductor, Shariman Jamil, di sidang akhbar rasmi bersama YB Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Menteri Pendidikan, Inovasi dan Pembangunan Bakat (MEITD) Sarawak.

Beyond “thinking outside the box”—how well do you actually know what’s inside the box?

That was the core question driving SMD Semiconductor's two-day in-house training at the Mulu Conference Hall (26–27 August 2026). Guided by the powerful “Unleashing Creativity & Problem Solving Through LEGO Serious Play” methodology, our team spent two immersive days challenging conventional approaches to innovation.

From our core engineers to our non-technical members, we came together to shift our mindsets, design new ways of thinking, and build hands-on solutions to complex challenges—one brick at a time.

A huge thank you to our trainer, Mr. Christopher Raj Anthony from IK (Integrated-Knowledge) Academy, a certified LEGO Serious Play Facilitator, for pushing us to look deeper, think differently, and solve better!

SMD today marked an important milestone with the symbolic presentation of its ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Certification by Intertek, reaffirming our continued commitment to quality and operational excellence.

Our CEO, Mr. Shariman Jamil, highlighted that the semiconductor industry demands exceptional precision and quality, making strong processes and quality management fundamental to SMD’s growth across design, product development and design services.

Mr. Joe Yip, Country Managing Director for Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines, Intertek Certification International, aptly described the occasion as “not simply a document handover, but a commitment from SMD towards quality and operational excellence.”

MOSTI Courtesy Visit to SMD Semiconductor!

We were pleased to welcome Puan Norsham Abdul Latip, Deputy Secretary-General (Technology Development), Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), together with Mr Surya Kumar a/l Subramaniam, Deputy Secretary of the Strategic Technology and S&T Applications Division, MOSTI, and Dr. Sarune Beh, Senior Private Secretary to the Minister of MOSTI, to SMD Semiconductor.

Thank you for including SMD Semiconductor in MOSTI’s official working visit to Kuching.

It was a productive engagement where we had the opportunity to share our efforts to develop an ecosystem that forms part of a complete global semiconductor value chain in Sarawak and, eventually, the Asia-Pacific region.

Great research creates knowledge, but great collaboration turns that knowledge into real-world impact.

We were pleased to host a delegation from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), led by Prof. Ts. Dr. Uda Bin Hashim, Lecturer in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, for an industrial visit and collaborative research exchange. Also joining the visit was Dr. Ervin Gubin Moung, Deputy Director (Operations), Research Management Centre, UMS.

The session featured an insightful technical talk by Prof. Ts. Dr. Uda titled “University-Industry Relationships: Research, IP and Commercialisation Strategies (Challenges and the Way Forward),” highlighting the importance of translating research, intellectual property (IP) and innovation into real-world value.

Ts. Dr. Mohd Rofei Mat Hussin, SMD’s Assistant Director of Technical Programme Development – Advanced IC Packaging and Compound Semiconductors, also shared SMD’s expertise and capabilities, opening discussions on how research and industry can work together to develop practical technology solutions.

The exchange provided our engineers with valuable perspectives on bridging research and industry, while strengthening opportunities for collaboration that can contribute to the growth of Sarawak’s semiconductor ecosystem.

Our sincere appreciation to the UMS delegation for the meaningful exchange. We look forward to building on this collaboration.
