Our BNI Construction heritage tour continued from our ongoing Medan Pasar restoration project to Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, a heritage restoration project proudly completed by Structural Repairs.

Our Managing Director, Mr Robert Yong, shared the building’s fascinating history — from its former roles as the General Post Office, British colonial administration offices, State Secretariat and Federal Court, to its transformation into a cultural and culinary hub featuring exhibitions.

Stepping into this project meant treating nearly a century of architectural history with the ultimate respect. These historic 1930s Art Deco shophouses required far more than a standard facelift; they demanded authentic, traditional craftsmanship.

Our team dedicated countless hours to restoring the building's signature shanghai plaster finish. Matching the exact aggregate sizes, color tones, and textures of the original structure was an intense labor of love. With no modern shortcuts allowed, our skilled artisans hand-textured the exterior surface to blend seamlessly with the past—a true testament to proud craftsmanship.

The result is a dramatic transformation that resurrects the historic beauty of Medan Pasar, turning what was once the city’s financial heartbeat into its newest cultural capital. Structural Repairs Managing Director Mr Robert Yong recently had the opportunity to brief the BNI Construction Power Team on one of our ongoing heritage restoration projects — Medan Pasar, Kuala Lumpur.

As a company specialising in building and infrastructure repairs, Structural Repairs is proud to contribute to the preservation and rejuvenation of this historic part of Kuala Lumpur.

Our scope of work at Medan Pasar includes:

🔹 Structural strengthening — ensuring the existing structures remain safe and resilient
🔹 Waterproofing — protecting the buildings from one of the biggest long-term threats to structures: water ingress
🔹 Façade restoration — carefully restoring the architectural character while giving the buildings a new lease of life

🏛️ From Building Repairs to Preserving History

Before our walk around Medan Pasar and Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, Structural Repairs Managing Director Mr Robert Yong shared his experience in building & infrastructure repairs, as well as the challenges and importance of heritage conservation.

Having completed the restoration of Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad last year, our team is now continuing the journey with the Medan Pasar Restoration Project, targeted for handover by the end of August.

For us, restoration is more than repairing buildings — it’s about preserving the stories, character and heritage of Kuala Lumpur for the next generation. ❤️🏛️

Did you catch the recent news in The Star? 📰✨ Something beautiful is taking shape in downtown KL, and we are thrilled to be a part of it! 🚧👀

The historic Medan Pasar square is being transformed into a vibrant art hub with the upcoming launch of the Muara Arts gallery, which is officially opening its doors on November 1, 2026! 🗓️ To get these 1930s heritage shophouses ready, the team at Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd has been hard at work behind the scenes.

Our current mission? Restoring the classic, highly specialized Shanghai Plaster work on the building's exterior façade—a key focus highlighted in The Star's coverage of the adaptive reuse project.

Working on a heritage façade is incredibly tedious and difficult work. It requires a rare blend of science and art, where modern shortcuts simply cannot be used. Our Project Manager explains what goes on behind the scaffolding:

"Matching a century-old finish requires meticulous calibration. We have to test multiple combinations of crushed stone, lime, and cement to ensure the new repairs blend flawlessly with the old. It’s a slow, painstaking process. Our specialized artisans are treating this façade like a canvas, hand-texturing the plaster to replicate exactly what was done by craftsmen in the 1930s."

Recent news coverage highlighted the importance of preserving historical buildings, following the Sultan of Selangor’s visit to Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad.

Built in 1894, this iconic landmark represents Malaysia’s rich administrative and cultural heritage. The Sultan emphasised that such heritage assets must be continuously preserved and not neglected due to cost considerations.
