Medical Technologist (GEMS @ Universiti Malaya)

Role Overview:
We are looking for a hands-on and highly independent Medical Technologist to support operations at GEMS @ UM. This role is suited for individuals who are comfortable working in a lean team environment and are able to operate with minimal supervision while ensuring high standards of quality and compliance.
Candidates should have experience in handling pathology specimens, and be confident in communicating with clinicians and pathologists, while managing day-to-day laboratory operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Laboratory Operations & Testing
• Perform laboratory procedures in accordance with established SOPs
• Handle and process pathology specimens accurately and efficiently
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment
• Perform technical validation and ensure reliability of results
Clinical & Stakeholder Communication
• Liaise with clinicians and pathologists on test requirements and results
• Handle customer and clinician inquiries professionally and promptly
• Escalate issues, complaints, or feedback where necessary
Quality & Compliance
• Ensure compliance with laboratory safety, regulatory, and quality standards
• Participate in quality improvement, audits, and external QA programs
• Support incident investigation and corrective actions
Laboratory Management
• Manage inventory, purchasing, and stock control in a lean setup
• Maintain SOPs, documentation, and quality records
• Ensure smooth day-to-day lab operations with minimal supervision
Systems & Administration:
• Operate and maintain Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)
• Participate in training, competency assessments, and proficiency testing
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Biotechnology, or equivalent
• Minimum 2 years of clinical laboratory experience
• Proven experience in handling pathology specimens
• Experience working with clinicians and/or pathologists preferred
• Familiarity with lab operations, inventory management, and SOP control
• Experience in PCR, NGS, FISH, IHC, or molecular diagnostics is an advantage

• Strong sense of ownership and accountability for lab operations
• Good communication skills (English and Malay)
• High attention to detail and accuracy
• Organized, proactive, and able to manage multiple responsibilities
Additional Requirements:
• Good general health and no color blindness
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, lean laboratory environment
