2-July-2026: New Leadership Announcement: Welcoming the New Head of LDMRC.

The Low Dimensional Materials Research Centre (LDMRC) and the Department of Physics at Universiti Malaya are thrilled to announce the official appointment of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Shuhaimi Abu Bakar as our new Head of Centre, effective 2 July 2026.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Shuhaimi is a highly respected figure within the UM scientific community and an expert in semiconductor technology. An alumnus of the Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan, he has been instrumental in advancing advanced materials research in Malaysia, most notably leading the Nitride Semiconductor Laboratory and spearheading the setup of the nation's first MOCVD growth facility right here at LDMRC. As he takes the helm, we look forward to a new chapter of pioneering research, innovation, and global collaboration in low-dimensional materials and optoelectronics.

Please join us in giving Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Shuhaimi a warm welcome and wishing him the absolute best as he leads LDMRC toward new horizons of academic and technological excellence!

1-July-2026: Celebrating a Legacy of Innovation & Leadership: Happy Retirement, Prof. Dr. Wan Haliza Abd Majid!

The Low Dimensional Materials Research Centre (LDMRC) and the Department of Physics at Universiti Malaya mark a truly bittersweet milestone. Effective 1 July 2026, we officially bid a happy retirement to our esteemed Head of Centre, Prof. Dr. Wan Haliza Abd Majid.

For decades, Prof. Wan Haliza has been the guiding force behind LDMRC’s breakthrough research, a visionary pioneer in low-dimensional physics and organic electronics, and a deeply cherished mentor to countless postgraduate students and faculty members. Her unwavering commitment to academic excellence and nurturing the next generation of scientists has left a permanent mark on Universiti Malaya and the wider scientific community.

Thank you, Professor, for:
- Your Visionary Leadership: Leading LDMRC with passion, elevating our research profile globally.
- Your Academic Mentorship: Guiding future physicists with immense patience, wisdom, and kindness.

23-Jan-26: We were honored to host a high-level delegation today at the Low Dimensional Materials Research Centre (LDMRC), Universiti Malaya!

We were privileged to welcome Mr. Shu Huang, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) Fujian Province, along with esteemed representatives from Xiamen University.

The visit focused on:
✅ Reviewing Progress: Briefing on the successful ongoing collaboration projects between Xiamen and UM.
✅ Future Frontiers: Strategic discussions on expanding our research synergy and launching new joint initiatives.
✅ Lab Tour: Showcasing our cutting-edge facilities at the Nitride Lab.

International partnerships are the heartbeat of scientific breakthroughs. By combining the expertise of Fujian’s tech leadership, Xiamen University’s academic excellence, and UM’s research prowess, we are building a brighter future for materials science and innovation.
