Underwater and wind powered too. World's first

China is drawing attention for an impressive clean-tech milestone, with an underwater data center powered by an offshore wind farm now operating off the coast of Shanghai.

From a chemical point of view, salt also has hygroscopic properties. When in contact with moist food, salt has the ability to absorb the water contained in the food.

Scientists are developing a new type of concrete that does more than hold up buildings. This material can store and release electrical energy, acting a bit like a giant battery built right into walls, floors or roads. The idea is to mix ordinary cement with tiny carbon particles and special electrolytes so the hardened concrete becomes electron-conducting. Inside it forms a network that can hold a charge and then let it flow back out. This means that parts of a house or a bridge could one day store energy from solar panels or wind turbines and power lights, appliances or electric cars without needing separate batteries.

Recent improvements have boosted how much energy this concrete can hold. In new tests, a cubic metre of the material can store enough electricity to run a refrigerator for a day. Previously, much more concrete was needed for the same energy. These advances came from mixing the electrolytes into the concrete at the very start and using better electrolyte formulas that help ions move more easily inside the material.

Although this technology is still emerging and not yet ready for every home, it points toward a future where buildings and infrastructure do double duty: giving shelter and storing clean energy. Researchers also see potential for charging electric vehicles from concrete parking areas or supporting off-grid living without traditional batteries.

The amount of solar power generated in the U.S. is continuing to grow despite efforts from the US administration to slow down the renewable energy sector.

Solar energy has officially surpassed coal as a source of electricity generation in the United States.

It’s a historic turning point in America’s transition to clean energy.

In a monumental milestone for the American energy grid, solar power generated 12.8 percent of the nation's electricity in May 2026, officially outperforming coal's 12.2 percent share.

According to data from the global energy think tank Ember, this historic shift reflects a rapid multi-year trend: over the last five years alone, coal generation has plummeted by nearly half, while solar generation has more than doubled.

Energy analysts suggest this record is only the beginning, with solar positioned as the third-largest and fastest-growing source of power in the United States, poised to set even higher records during the peak summer months.

Despite this clean energy breakthrough, the Trump administration recently announced $700 million in federal funding to prop up the declining coal industry.

The initiative, which redirects congressional funds originally intended for carbon reduction, plans to reverse the closures of five aging coal plants and finance new facilities in West Virginia and Alaska.

This controversial strategy has drawn sharp criticism from environmentalists and energy experts alike, who warn that subsidizing the highly polluting fossil fuel could cause the U.S. to lose critical ground in the global race for renewable energy dominance.

This is interesting!

The snakelike robots spiral around power lines in Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan, to detect hazards such as broken wires, worn components and abnormal temperatures.

In Kunming, robot dogs are also being deployed to ensure the energy supply during the high-stakes college entrance exams.

In the US, data centers now consume 6% of the nation's total electricity, with an estimated 3 gigawatts of that power wasted entirely on unused 'zombie' applications that were never turned off.

Vast warehouses of microchips powering the global AI boom are putting unprecedented strain on national power grids, according to new research from the International Data Center Authority (IDCA). Driven by a 15% global increase in energy consumption over just two years, annual investment in data centrs is rapidly approaching $1 trillion—nearly 1% of the global economy.

In fact, analyses reveal that these data centers now consumer 6% of all energy in *both* the US and the UK. This rapid expansion has triggered severe energy shortages and multi-year delays for grid connections in the UK, while raising urgent questions about the environmental toll of unchecked tech growth.

The escalating energy demand is provoking significant pushback as tech footprints cross critical thresholds, with campaigners like Greenpeace warning that the AI boom could drive up energy bills, strain water supplies, and revive fossil fuels. Critics are calling for greater transparency, proper environmental impact assessments, and a crackdown on inefficiencies, such as the estimated 3 gigawatts of power wasted on unused 'zombie' services in the US alone.

As datacentres are increasingly targeted as critical infrastructure, the tech industry faces mounting pressure to address both its massive ecological footprint and growing security vulnerabilities.
