Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC)

Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC) MABIC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the understanding of biotechnology in Malaysia at all levels of society.

MABIC was set up in June 2000 to bridge the information gap amongst various stakeholder groups and to make technical information more accessible to non-technical individuals. MABIC is a not-for-profit, local node of a global network, with the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) as the parent institute and sister offices across all continents. Our aim is t

o generate and foster closer relations amongst various stakeholders in order to enhance the exchange of information and knowledge between these groups. Through MABIC activities, we strive to provide a platform where important issues on biotechnology can be explored and discussed. Seminars, workshops and public forums are organised in collaboration with interested parties to create public awareness and to inform stakeholders of the current issues in biotechnology. MABIC also facilitates dialogues between stakeholder groups encouraging broad perspective discussions on various biotechnology topics. Additionally, MABIC also releases a newsletter(BiCalert) and a news tabloid (The Petri Dish) on a monthly basis.

I earned too many hats throughout my career with Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC). Here as the Advisor for the Science Communication Advisory Committee for COMSTECH, the Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation of the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation).

We are brainstorming a workshop with Association of Arab Universities (AARU) and Association of Agricultural Research Institutions in the Near East and North Africa (AARINENA).

Hoping to realise this collaboration with a workshop in Jordan for the Muslim countries.

Biogenes Technologies achieved their next milestone by receiving National Technology Innovation Sandbox Fund 3 ( NTIS 3) from Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) today.

Biogenes is the first company to receive NTIS 3 after NTIS 1. NTIS is a funding mechanism to support our local startups to validate their technology and move forward to the commercialisation level. NTIS 3 is dedicated for commercialisation stage.

MTDC provides the ecosystem for our local startups not only through fundings but connecting them to the experts and facilitating the regulation process.

Climate change is impacting the planet faster than scientists predicted and the quickest way to avert dangerous climate catastrophes is by cutting down methane emissions.

The Environmental Defense Fund being a pioneer in addressing climate change, celebrated their one-year milestone of the very first methane coalition in Malaysia. This initiative is led by EDF’s Director of Global Energy Transition, Shareen Yawanarajah assisted by Asia Pacific Consultant of Energy Transition, Emily Oi Yen Tse.

EDF celebrated their shared advocacy for a vital planet with local partners – the Centre for Environment, Technology and Development, Malaysia (CETDEM), the Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC), Science Media Centre Malaysia, Universiti Technology Petronas (UTP) and CERAH Asia.
