Why is yield stress testing important?
In many products, especially in tube, yield stress determines the flow behavior. One of the best examples is toothpaste.
In the application note, two toothpaste samples (A and B) were tested under increasing shear stress. When stress is applied, a toothpaste with a yield of stress initially behaves like an elastic solid. As stress increases, viscosity may appear to rise because the material resists movement. But once the ๐ฒ๐ข๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ is reached, the internal structure breaks down โ and the toothpaste begins to flow. This moment is captured as a ๐ฉ๐๐๐ค ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฏ๐ข๐ฌ๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฏ๐, which defines the yield stress value.
โ Avoid:
A formulation with ๐ญ๐จ๐จ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ ๐ฒ๐ข๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ may feel runny or separated.
A formulation with ๐ญ๐จ๐จ ๐ก๐ข๐ ๐ก ๐ฒ๐ข๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ may be stiff, difficult to dispense, or slow to spread
