Why is yield stress testing important?

In many products, especially in tube, yield stress determines the flow behavior. One of the best examples is toothpaste.

In the application note, two toothpaste samples (A and B) were tested under increasing shear stress. When stress is applied, a toothpaste with a yield of stress initially behaves like an elastic solid. As stress increases, viscosity may appear to rise because the material resists movement. But once the ๐ฒ๐ข๐ž๐ฅ๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ is reached, the internal structure breaks down โ€” and the toothpaste begins to flow. This moment is captured as a ๐ฉ๐ž๐š๐ค ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฏ๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐œ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž, which defines the yield stress value.
