🧵 Handling soft materials requires a different kind of automation

In textile manufacturing, not every product can be handled the same way. Fabrics are flexible, lightweight, and easily deformed. Itmaking traditional gripping methods less reliable and sometimes even damaging to the material.

This is where soft gripping technology becomes important. Instead of rigid mechanical force, soft grippers adapt to the shape and texture of the material, allowing for gentle yet stable handling throughout the process.

From picking and placing to sorting and transferring, the ability to handle textiles without distortion or slippage plays a key role in maintaining product quality and consistency.

With the right gripping solution, automation is no longer limited to rigid or structured items . It can now extend into softer, more delicate applications with confidence 🤖

Because in industries like textiles, precision is not just about accuracy,
it’s about handling every material with the right level of care.

In modern manufacturing, automation is no longer just about movement,
it’s about precision, repeatability, energy efficiency, and long-term reliability.

This is where electric actuators and industrial robotics are becoming increasingly important across production environments 🌿

With decades of expertise in pneumatic-free automation technology, IAI Automation Japan is widely recognised for its compact electric actuators, Cartesian robots, SCARA robots, and intelligent motion systems designed for high-precision industrial applications.

Unlike traditional pneumatic systems, electric actuators provide smoother motion control, better positioning accuracy, lower maintenance, and significantly improved energy efficiency. In many applications, replacing pneumatic cylinders with electric actuators can greatly reduce energy consumption while improving operational consistency.

From electronics and automotive manufacturing to logistics, medical, and semiconductor industries, these solutions help manufacturers achieve smarter and more flexible production workflows.

At XTS Technologies, we continue to support industries with advanced automation solutions that improve productivity, precision, and operational performance for the future of smart manufacturing 🤖

📦 The hidden cost of manual picking in manufacturing

Manual picking has long been a standard practice in many manufacturing environments. It appears straightforward, such as operators locate items, pick them, and move them along the production process. Without the need for advanced systems or major upfront investment, it often feels like a practical and cost-effective approach.

However, as operations grow in scale and complexity, the limitations of manual picking begin to surface. What seems efficient at a smaller scale can gradually turn into a bottleneck when order volumes increase and product variations expand.

A significant amount of time is often spent not on picking itself, but on searching for items, verifying locations, and double-checking quantities. These small delays may seem negligible in isolation, but across hundreds of tasks each day, they accumulate into a substantial loss of productivity.

At the same time, manual processes rely heavily on operator experience and consistency. This introduces variability between shifts, increases the likelihood of errors, and extends the time required to train new personnel. Mistakes in picking can lead to rework, production delays, or disruptions further down the line, all of which carry hidden operational costs.

Over time, these inefficiencies create a gap between actual output and potential performance. The cost is no longer just labour, but lost time, reduced accuracy, and limited scalability.

This is why many manufacturing operations are re-evaluating their approach. By introducing guided or automated systems, they are able to reduce dependency on manual processes, improve consistency, and create a more stable and efficient workflow.

Because in today’s environment, efficiency is not just about getting the job done,
it’s about how well the system performs as demand continues to grow.

In food processing environments, conveyor systems are not just about movement, they directly impact hygiene, product quality, and compliance.

But in many facilities, conveyor design is still treated like a standard industrial setup… and that’s where problems start.

Small design oversights can lead to contamination risks, difficult cleaning, and long-term operational issues.

🚫 Using non food-grade materials that are not suitable for direct or indirect contact
🧼 Poor design with hard-to-clean areas or dirt traps
💧 Lack of proper drainage for washdown environments
🍞 Incorrect belt selection for the product type (e.g. sticky, wet, fragile items)
📋 Ignoring hygiene standards and compliance requirements

These issues may not be obvious at the start,
but over time, they can lead to higher maintenance, downtime, and even safety concerns.

So what should be done differently?

It starts with choosing the right materials, designing for easy cleaning (no hidden gaps or dead zones), and selecting conveyor types that match the actual product and environment. More importantly, the system should be planned with hygiene standards in mind from the beginning, not added in later.

A well-designed food conveyor system isn’t just efficient.
It ensures safety, compliance, and long-term reliability in daily operations.

💡 Pick-to-Light vs Traditional Picking, What’s the real difference?

Many warehouses still rely on paper lists or handheld scanners for picking. It gets the job done, but as order volume increases, the process often becomes slower, more dependent on experience, and prone to human error.

Pick-to-Light takes a different approach ✨

Instead of searching, reading, and verifying manually, operators are guided visually. The system tells you exactly where to go, what to pick, and confirms the task instantly to keeping everything moving with minimal interruption.

Here’s how they compare:

⚡ Speed — manual picking depends on searching and reading, while Pick-to-Light reduces movement and decision time
🎯 Accuracy — traditional methods rely heavily on operator attention, whereas light-guided picking significantly reduces errors
👷 Training — manual processes take time to learn, but Pick-to-Light is intuitive and quick to pick up
📦 Scalability — as volume grows, manual systems struggle, while Pick-to-Light supports consistent performance

It’s not just about replacing a method ,
it’s about improving how efficiently your entire fulfilment process works.
