๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐ŸŒ How do super El Niรฑo events reshape rainfall in Southeast Asia?

This study reveals that not all El Niรฑo events affect Southeast Asia in the same way. By comparing three major super El Niรฑo episodes (1982/83, 1997/98, and 2015/16), the research shows that differences in El Niรฑo strength, pattern, and type drive distinct teleconnection mechanismsโ€”resulting in varied seasonal rainfall impacts across the region.

Significant rainfall reductions were observed, particularly over Indonesia and the Philippines during the SON season, with the 1997/98 event causing the most severe drying due to the combined influence of a strong positive Indian Ocean Dipole. These findings highlight the importance of understanding climate variability to better anticipate future hydroclimatic risks in equatorial Southeast Asia.
