HOW TO SIZE A DC BREAKER FOR A SOLAR SYSTEM
One common mistake I see in solar installations is choosing a DC breaker based only on the voltage of the system.
Voltage alone is NOT enough. You also need to consider the current and the cable size.
Here’s a simple guide

STEP 1: Find the maximum operating current
For a solar panel/string, check the Imp (operating current) and Isc (short-circuit current) on the panel datasheet.
For example:
If a panel has:
Isc = 17A
Imp = 16A
A common approach is to size the protective device above the expected operating/short-circuit current, while following the applicable electrical code and the equipment manufacturer's requirements.

STEP 2: Consider the number of parallel strings
If you have multiple PV strings connected in parallel, their currents add up.
For example:
2 strings × 17A Isc = 34A
3 strings × 17A Isc = 51A
So the breaker/fuse must be selected based on the resulting array current and the manufacturer's/code requirements.

STEP 3: Check the DC voltage rating
The breaker must have a DC voltage rating higher than the maximum possible PV voltage.
For example, if your PV string can reach 450V under cold conditions, don't use a breaker rated only for 250V DC.

DC is different from AC.
A breaker designed for AC may not safely interrupt a DC arc. Always use a breaker specifically rated for the required DC voltage and application.

STEP 4: Check the cable ampacity
Your breaker should also coordinate properly with the cable.
The goal is:
Load/array current → Cable ampacity → Protective device
You don't want to install a large breaker on a small cable simply because the current calculation allows it.

STEP 5: Consider the equipment manufacturer's specification
Always check the inverter, charge controller, combiner box and panel manufacturer's requirements.
Some equipment specifies a particular maximum fuse/breaker size.

📌 Example:
Suppose a PV string has:
Isc = 17A
Imp = 16A
Maximum PV voltage = 450V
You might select a properly rated DC protective device around 20–25A, depending on the applicable code, module characteristics, conductor ampacity and manufacturer's requirements.

The key point: Don't just say, "It's a 48V system, so I'll use a 63A breaker."
Breaker sizing depends on CURRENT, VOLTAGE, CABLE AMPACITY, EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS AND THE TYPE OF CIRCUIT.

Proper sizing = safer installation + better protection + fewer unnecessary trips.
