OGSG MOVES TO IMPROVE POWER GENERATION

Ogun State government has put machineries in motion to set up an industrial power house, to ensure uninterrupted power supply through a drafted bill that would soon become law.

This disclosure was made in Lagos by Mr. Olawale Oluwo, the Global Adviser, Boston Power Limited, who is the Consultant to the Ogun State government on Power, during a Stakeholders’ Workshop on the Ogun State Electricity Market.

Mr. Oluwo said the workshop was to map out ways to reform the electricity sector in the state, towards achieving adequate power supply for households, industrial and commercial use, alongside other public sector institutions within the state.

He pointed out that bills had been drafted and forwarded to the state House of Assembly and expected to be signed into law by Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Also speaking, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Energy, Mr. Olufemi Omisanjo, explained that the bill would engender sufficient capacity to generate, transmit, distribute power and collect tariffs which would serve as an avenue to generate revenue for the state.

Omisanjo, who revealed that the proposed Ministry of Energy and State Electricity Regulation would be established to oversee the activities of the power sector, added that the control and regulation of the state electricity space would no longer be under the Federal Government when the agency is in operation, calling for private sector partnership and initiative, in a bid to ensure its success.

"This is a testament to a job done from five to six months ago, to design a proper structure and system for the Ogun State government with Consultants from the Ministry of Justice and various stakeholders.

“In creating a viable and functional market, the workshop is an avenue for government and its Consultants to meet with various stakeholders and investors, in order to understand how we intend to fashion out the very viable and bankable Ogun state Electricity Market”, he said.

A participant at the workshop, Mr. Babatunde Oshadare, noted that the project would ensure increased power supply for improved living condition of residents in the state.

Ogun State Government has put smiles on the faces of indigenes of Owode Egba in Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area of the state, through the provision of a 7500KVA transformer with accessories worth over N200million.

The transformer replaced the old 500kVA, which was abandoned for 20 months, to boost the socio-economic life of the people of the community.

Speaking on the gesture in his palace at Owode Egba, the Olu of Owode, Oba Kolawole Sowemimo, said the town had been in darkness for over 18 months, thereby paralysing several growing and existing business activities in the area.

According to Oba Sowemimo, "I have never seen this type of transformer; it is indeed, a substation. It will cushion the effect of the blackout.

"Before we were given this transformer, we had spent over N5million to repair the one we are managing which finally packed up after two months of repairs. We give it to Governor Abiodun for bringing a power station to Owode Egba, as it will light up all the community’’.

Remarking, the High Chief of Owode Egba, Hon. Deji Sowemimo, reiterated that it was a huge development that would not be forgotten, noting that the provision would bring back the lost glory of the community and improve the security of the area.
