NEW NIMME LEADERSHIP PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO NBRRI DG, SEEKS STRONGER STRATEGIC COLLABORATION
The newly elected executives of the Nigerian Institute of Metallurgical, Mining and Material Engineers (NIMME) on Thursday, 26th February 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the Director-General/CEO of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) at the Institute’s Headquarters, Abuja.
The seven-member delegation was led by the National Chairman, Engr. Micheal Ifeanyi Orekyel, who expressed profound appreciation for the long-standing, cordial, and mutually beneficial relationship between NIMME and NBRRI. He noted that both institutions have continued to collaborate productively in advancing engineering practice, materials research, and professional development in Nigeria.
During the visit, Engr. Orekyel reflected on the passing of Engr. Dr. Friday Ichifu Apeh, a former National Chairman of NIMME and past Director at NBRRI, describing him as a dedicated, focused, and visionary engineer whose contributions significantly impacted both institutions.
In honour of his legacy, he announced that a student essay competition has been renamed the Engr. Dr. Friday Ichifu Apeh Student Competition at the institution of Midwal Engineering, as a lasting tribute to his professional excellence and commitment to mentorship.
The National Chairman also referenced the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between NIMME and NBRRI, particularly in the areas of public training and materials research initiatives. He expressed optimism that the partnership would soon begin to yield tangible results through enhanced service delivery and joint technical engagements.
A major highlight of the visit was the formal introduction of the newly elected executives to the DG/CEO and Management of NBRRI. Engr. Micheal Ifeanyi Orekyel was presented as the 13th National Chairman, alongside Engr. Chinasaokwu Okorie as Vice Chairman, and other executive members serving in various capacities.
The delegation used the opportunity to formally invite the Director-General/CEO of NBRRI to the inauguration ceremony of the 13th National Chairman and Executive members, scheduled to hold on Wednesday, 11th March 2026, at the Nigerian Society of Engineers Headquarters Main Auditorium, Abuja.
In furtherance of their strategic engagement, NIMME sought NBRRI’s support in several key areas, including:
Advert placement or sponsorship for the inauguration event.
Active participation in the upcoming NIMME 2026 International Conference and Exhibition scheduled to hold in Lafia.
Provide specialist paper presenters for the conference.
Nominate participants to attend the event.
Set up exhibition stands to showcase NBRRI’s products, research outputs, and services.
Additionally, the delegation presented NIMME’s 2026 Training Calendar and encouraged NBRRI to nominate staff for various professional development programmes aimed at deepening technical expertise. They also emphasized the need for continuous information exchange and collaborative idea-sharing to sustain and strengthen the relationship between both institutions.
In his response, the Director-General/CEO of NBRRI, Engr. Prof. Samson Duna, congratulated the newly elected Chairman and Executive members, urging them to give their best in their respective offices. He advised them to ensure that by the end of their tenure, they would leave the Institute stronger and more impactful than they met it. The DG encouraged the executives to remain proactive, innovative, and relevant in advancing the objectives of their professional body.
Prof. Duna also commended NIMME for honouring the late Engr. Dr. Friday Ichifu Apeh through the renaming of the student essay competition, describing the gesture as noble and worthy of emulation.
On the core issues raised during the visit, the DG assured the delegation of NBRRI’s continued support and active participation, both at the inauguration ceremony and at the forthcoming international conference and exhibition.

NIGERIAN BUILDING AND ROAD RESEARCH INSTITUTE (NBRRI) AND YAKUBU GOWON UNIVERSITY SEAL STRATEGIC MOU TO BRIDGE THEORY–PRACTICE GAP

On 26th February 2026, the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Yakubu Gowon University (Formally University of Abuja) at the NBRRI’s Administrative Headquarters in Abuja, marking a significant milestone in academic and research collaboration.
The three-man delegation from Yakubu Gowon University, led by Prof. Kayode Adesola, who conveyed the University’s commitment to building a strong institutional partnership focused on research, innovation, and practical capacity development.
The MOU signing ceremony brought together the Director-General/CEO and Management of NBRRI alongside senior representatives of the visiting University. The agreement establishes a formal framework for cooperation in academic and research activities between the two institutions.
Speaking during the engagement, Prof. Kayode Adesola emphasized that the partnership became necessary following the discovery of a noticeable gap between theoretical instruction and practical application among young graduates. According to him, “The MOU became necessary because we discovered a gap between theory and practice in young graduates, and that is the gap we are trying to bridge.” He noted that the collaboration will enable students and researchers to gain hands-on exposure, practical insights, and industry-relevant experience that will better prepare them for the demands of the professional environment.
The Memorandum of Understanding provides for:
Exchange of academic and research personnel for collaborative initiatives.
Joint research projects and dissemination of research findings.
Presentation of specialized courses and seminars.
Institutional collaboration in identified areas of mutual interest.
Capacity-building programmes through staff and knowledge exchange.
The partnership is expected to encourage the cross-fertilization of ideas, improve research output, and enhance innovation in the building and road construction sector and related disciplines.
Chief Daniel Makava, Director of the Consultancy and Extension Services Department of NBRRI, who is in charge of coordinating the collaboration, provided a brief overview of the importance of the agreement. He reiterated that structured partnerships such as this are essential for national development, particularly in strengthening the synergy between academia and research institutions. He explained that through the Consultancy and Extension Services Department, NBRRI will ensure the effective implementation of the MOU by facilitating staff exchanges, coordinating joint programmes, and monitoring collaborative projects to achieve measurable outcomes.
In his remarks, the Director-General/CEO of NBRRI, Engr. Prof. Samson Duna commended the leadership of Yakubu Gowon University for initiating a partnership aimed at producing graduates who are both academically sound and practically equipped. He reaffirmed the Institute’s readiness to deploy its technical expertise, laboratories, and research infrastructure to ensure the success of the collaboration.

NBRRI WELCOMES NEWLY EMPLOYED STAFF WITH ORIENTATION PROGRAMME IN ABUJA
Securing employment in Nigeria today is a moment of great joy, and gaining a Federal Government appointment is often seen as a mark of rare opportunity and divine favour. These sentiments formed part of the welcome address delivered by Mr. Peter Mashem, Deputy Director, Information, as he anchored the event organized by the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) for an orientation exercise held at the Institute’s Administrative Office, Abuja, on Wednesday, 11 February 2026.
The orientation programme was organized to formally welcome the new employees into the Institute and to acquaint them with NBRRI’s operations. It provided an official platform for the Director-General, Directors, and Heads of Departments to introduce the Institute’s mandate, core values, departmental structures, functions, and the civil service rules guiding staff conduct.
Declaring the programme open, the Director-General of NBRRI, Engr. Prof. Samson Duna, warmly welcomed the newly employed staff and expressed appreciation to the Directors and Heads of Departments for their active roles in ensuring the success of the recruitment exercise. He urged the new staff to strictly adhere to the Institute’s rules and regulations, uphold due process in all official engagements, and conduct themselves as responsible citizens. The Director-General further encouraged them to be diligent, committed, and proactive in developing themselves through continuous learning, training, and further education.
As part of the programme, Directors and Heads of Departments took turns to address the new staff, explaining the functions and activities of their respective departments and units. They outlined assigned duties and expectations, while collectively encouraging the new employees to demonstrate dedication, professionalism, and a strong sense of responsibility in contributing to the growth of the Institute and national development.
In her concluding session, the Director of Administration and Personnel, Mrs. Rosemary Emore, provided detailed guidance on work ethics, civil service rules, codes of conduct, and other essential regulations. She carefully explained key administrative procedures and expectations, equipping the newly employed staff with the knowledge required for effective service delivery within the Institute.

EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE: NBRRI DG HONOURED WITH SERVICOM AMBASSADORIAL AWARD
In a significant stride toward enhancing public service excellence, the SERVICOM Unit of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST) conducted a high-level courtesy visit to the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, February 4th, 2026. The highlight of the visit was the conferment of the prestigious SERVICOM Ambassadorial Award on the Director-General of NBRRI, Professor Samson Duna. This honour serves as a formal recognition of his transformative leadership and his unwavering dedication to institutional reforms and service delivery.
Professor Duna was further distinguished as the “Most Outstanding and Supportive Director-General,” a title reflecting his deep-seated commitment to institutional efficiency, staff welfare, and the core principles of the SERVICOM charter. The ceremony also took a moment to celebrate individual excellence within the ranks of the Institute, as the award for Most Punctual and Best Dressed Staff was presented to Mr. Anthony Udenyi, with Mr. Boniface Ajah receiving the honour on his behalf.
Delivering a goodwill message, the FMIST Deputy Director of Reforms, Mrs. Ekpo Emma, characterized SERVICOM as a vital social contract between the government and the Nigerian public. She emphasized that while policies provide a framework, meaningful change is only achieved through service-oriented leadership and a positive commitment to reform. Her sentiments were echoed by Mr. Sesugh Dubara, who represented the National Coordinator of SERVICOM, Mrs. Ngozi Akinbodewa. Mr. Dubara highlighted NBRRI’s strategic importance to the national economy, noting that the Institute’s research into construction and engineering materials is a cornerstone for infrastructure sustainability and public safety.
The event was attended by several notable figures, including the FMIST Head of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Pauline Sule, alongside a dedicated delegation of SERVICOM representatives. In a heartfelt response, Professor Duna expressed his profound appreciation to the SERVICOM leadership, describing this recognition as the most significant honour of his professional career. He reaffirmed his personal mission to advocate for the continued growth of SERVICOM initiatives across the country.
Professor Duna further elaborated on his administration’s philosophy, which prioritizes staff welfare through the modernization of facilities and the creation of a conducive workflow. Beyond internal management, he underscored NBRRI’s commitment to national academic growth, citing the Institute's annual initiative to provide specialized laboratory equipment to prominent Nigerian universities, including Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; the University of Lagos; the University of Abuja; and the University of Calabar, among others.

PROMOTING EDUCATION; NBRRI DONATES A BLOCK OF THREE-CLASSROOMS TO IGAMODE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL, OTA, OGUN STATE
The Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) on the 28th January, 2026 put a smile on the faces of the management staff and students of Igamode Junior High School, Ojuore, Ota, Ogun State has the institute donated and commissioned a block o three-classroom for educational wellbeing of the community.
The block of classrooms which is constructed with NBRRI’s interlocking block technology was donated as part of the Institute’s Corporate Social Responsibility reinforcing its commitment to capacity building and the promotion of locally developed construction materials.
Representing the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of NBRRI, Engr. Prof Samson Duna, the Coordinator of the National Laboratory Complex Engr. Dr. Sulymon Nurain Adeyinka formally handed over the facility to the school’s Principal, Mrs. Hassan M.O. who then charged the school to preserve the building, noting that with proper care, it will serve generations of learners. A solemn moment marked the event when a one-minute silence in honour of late Dr. F. I. Apeh, who supervised the project before his demise. He also used the occasion to brief attendees on NBRRI’s mandate, vision, mission, and core values.
In her response, Mrs. Hassan expressed heartfelt appreciation to the DG and NBRRI management, pledging on behalf of the teaching and non-teaching staff as well as the Parent/Teacher Association, that the facility will be well maintained.
Delivering a goodwill message, Mr. Akintoye Olarewanju, who described the project as a blessing to the host community, staff, and students. Teachers and students echoed this sentiment, celebrating the new classrooms as a major boost to learning and infrastructure.
Mr. Haruna Danjuma Israel, Coordinator of the Planning and Information Technology Department of NBRRI, encouraged teachers and students to visit NBRRI to explore its facilities and innovations, including Computer-Based Testing platforms, laboratories, and fabricated machines for the built industry. The project coordinator, Engr. Oshodi R.O, led a tour of the new classrooms, fielding questions on the operation and benefits of the interlocking block technology.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Mrs. Shodiya G.O., Principal of Igamode Senior High School lauded NBRRI for the benevolent gesture and prayed for more impactful interventions in the future.

DG, NBBRI HONORED BY FEMALE STUDENTS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA
The Female Students Association of Nigeria (FSAN) has presented an award to the Director-General/CEO, of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) Prof. Samson Duna, in recognition of his outstanding support and contributions to the association
The ceremony took place when a delegation of FSAN paid a courtesy visit to NBBRI on 14 January 2026.
The delegation led by its Secretary General, Mary Timothy, commended the DG for his immense support, particularly in the area of scholarships and youth empowerment, noting the positive impact of his leadership on the lives of students. She urged the Prof Duna to continue to do more so that many Students especially the females will feel his impact.
Responding, the NBRRI DG was represented by the Director of the Planning, Information and Technology Department, Mr. Kehinde Paul Arabi expressed gratitude to FSAN for the recognition and reaffirmed NBBRI’s commitment to societal growth and youth development.

NBRRI, SPRING IMPACT NIGERIA PARTNER TO TRAIN YOUTHS IN MASONRY AND TILING ENTREPRENEURSHIP
The Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), in collaboration with Spring Impact Nigeria, successfully organized an Entrepreneurship Training in Masonry and Tiling at the Institute’s Headquarters in Abuja on 8th January 2026.
The capacity building programme was designed to empower youths of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) with practical construction skills, innovative ideas, and entrepreneurial competencies required for self-reliance and leadership within Nigeria’s building and construction sector. A total of 100 participants benefitted from the training.
Declaring the programme open, the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of NBRRI, Engr. Prof. Samson Duna, recognized the presence of the National Chairman of TEKAN and ECWA Youths, Bishop Jim James Amos. FCT YOWICAN Secretary, Dr. Jeremiah Joshua Dandaura. ECWA youth president, Bro. Felix J.K Musa. He also appreciated the Director Consultancy and Extension Services Department NBRRI, Chief Daniel Makava who through his department the training was supervised. He also recognized and appreciated the presence of all the facilitators as well as the participants. He emphasized that empowering young people with relevant technical skills remains a critical pathway to national development, noting that youths are key drivers of economic growth and social stability. He further encouraged participants to concentrate and participate attentively in the workshop in order to gain practicable skills to enhance their growth and as well the growth of the society.
In his remarks, the Chairman of TEKAN/ECWA Youth Win Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), Bishop Dr. John James Amos, commended NBRRI for the initiative and encouraged participants to maximize the rare opportunity presented by the training. He stressed that the programme would not only enhance their employability but also prepare them for productive and self-reliant lives, contributing meaningfully to national development.
The training featured a series of technical and entrepreneurial presentations delivered by seasoned professionals. The first paper was presented by Miss Ann Asange, who spoke on Entrepreneurship in Masonry and Tiling. She highlighted the essential skills required for success in construction-based enterprises, with particular emphasis on effective communication, professionalism, and opportunity identification. The session was highly interactive and concluded with a robust question and answer segment.
The second presentation was delivered by Engr. Dr. Jibril Sule, Deputy Director and representative of the Building Research Department, NBRRI. His presentation focused on brick anatomy and production, covering material selection, brick-making machines, production processes, and quality considerations. Participants gained first-hand insights into NBRRI’s brick manufacturing techniques and the standards required for sustainable and durable construction.
The third paper, presented by Dr. Oche Innocent Onuche, addressed the digital marketing dimension of entrepreneurship. He educated participants on leveraging media and digital platforms to market skills and products, attract clients, and build sustainable income streams in today’s technology-driven economy.
The fourth presentation was delivered by Engr. Gidado Muhammad Tukur of the Consultancy and Extension Services Department, NBRRI. His session focused on tiling techniques, including layout patterns, style selection, timing considerations, and best practices for professional finishing. This was complemented by a live practical demonstration of proper tiling techniques.
A major highlight of the programme was the hands-on practical sessions, during which participants were exposed to block-making and tiling demonstrations. They were guided through the entire process—from sand selection and machine operation to tile installation. Participants also had the opportunity to operate brick-making machines and successfully produced blocks on site, reinforcing the technical knowledge acquired during the lectures.
Participants expressed high levels of enthusiasm and satisfaction throughout the training, noting that the programme provided practical solutions to challenges commonly faced in masonry and tiling practice. At the conclusion of the training, all participants were presented with Certificates of Completion, marking the successful end of the impactful programme.
Goodwill messages and words of appreciation were delivered by Bro. Felix J. K. Musa and Dr. Joshua Jeremiah Dandaura, FCT YOWICAN Secretary and Youth President, respectively. The vote of thanks was given by Hannatu Jacob on behalf of the participants, who expressed deep appreciation to NBRRI, Spring Impact Nigeria, and all facilitators for providing a valuable platform for skills development and youth empowerment.

ATTA PEOPLES ASSEMBLY HONOURS NBRRI DIRECTOR-GENERAL FOR EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
The Atta Peoples Assembly (APA) has conferred its prestigious Distinguished Excellence Award on the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Engr. Prof. Samson Duna. The honour was presented in recognition of his notable contributions to improving the well-being and infrastructural landscape of the Atta community.
During the award presentation ceremony, leaders and representatives of the Atta community expressed deep appreciation for Professor Duna’s unwavering commitment to grassroots development. They highlighted that his various interventions have directly enhanced the quality of life in the area, demonstrating his passion for service and his belief in community empowerment.
Over the years, Prof. Duna has supported developmental initiatives that have transformed key aspects of life in Atta. These include:
• Provision of solar streetlights, which now illuminate major parts of the community, improving night-time visibility, safety, and overall security for residents.
• Establishment of skill acquisition centres, equipping young people with practical vocational skills and strengthening their capacity for self-reliance and gainful employment.
• Construction and improvement of primary school buildings, providing children with a conducive and supportive learning environment capable of nurturing future leaders.
These interventions, according to the APA leadership, have not only addressed immediate community needs but have also laid a sustainable foundation for long-term educational growth, youth empowerment, and socio-economic development.
Speaking at the event, representatives of the Atta Peoples Assembly praised Prof. Duna for exemplifying excellence, compassion, and visionary leadership—qualities they described as the hallmark of a true nation-builder. They added that the Excellence Award is a well-deserved acknowledgement of a leader whose generosity has continued to inspire progress within and beyond the community.
The Assembly affirmed its commitment to building upon these developmental achievements, noting that the infrastructures and opportunities provided through Prof. Duna’s support will strengthen the Atta community for generations to come.

ANAN FCT 1 BRANCH PAYS CONDOLENCE VISIT TO NBRRI DIRECTOR-GENERAL
The Executive members of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), FCT 1 Branch, Abuja, paid a condolence visit to the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Engr. Prof. Samson Duna, on 10th December 2025. The visit followed the recent passing of his father, the late Baba Dila Duna.
The delegation was received at NBRRI’s Administrative Headquarters in Abuja, where some Management Staff of the Institute and members of the Accounts and Finance Department—who are also part of ANAN FCT 1—were present to honour the occasion.
In his remarks, the Chairman of ANAN FCT 1 Branch, Elder Allan Tsaku, expressed heartfelt sympathy over the demise of Professor Duna’s father. He prayed for God’s comfort upon the entire Duna family and noted that ANAN FCT 1 regards NBRRI as an integral part of its wider professional family. He added that this sense of shared community is what moved them to stand with the Director-General during this moment of loss.
Responding, Prof. Duna appreciated the delegation for their solidarity and thoughtful gesture. He described his late father as a man who lived a life of simplicity, integrity, and contentment—qualities he believes remain worthy of emulation. He stated that the family has accepted the loss with total submission to the will of God. The Director-General also commended ANAN FCT 1 for demonstrating true neighbourliness and praised the excellent work ethic of NBRRI’s Accounts and Finance Department, many of whom belong to the association.
A minute of silence was observed in honour of the late Baba Dila Duna, who passed away on 11th November 2025, marking the solemn highpoint of the visit.
