Otti Visits Alaoji Power Plant, Assures Of Abia Gov't's Support

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has thrown his weight behind efforts by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) to ensure massive improvement in power supply in the state and the nation at large.

The governor offered this support while speaking at the Alaoji Power Plant at Ugwunagbo Local Government Area of Abia State on Tuesday.

The Governor who visited the power plant in the company of Chrome Group's Chairman, Sir Dr. Emeka Offor promised that his administration would support the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) Contractor to ensure its success.

The plant which is a Simple Cycle Gas Turbine (SCGT) power plant as gathered has not been generating power for some time now due to issues related to gas supply. However, there is a plan for a massive upgrade to Combined Cycle Power plant that will help transform the electricity sector of the nation.

Otti disclosed that he has already held discussions with the Owners of the Power Plant to ensure that when completed that Abia state will be given the first priority of power generated from the plant.
His words; โ€œI would like to congratulate Sir Emeka Offor and the Chrome group for the wonderful work theyโ€™re doing here.

โ€œThis is the NDPHC Alaoji Generating Power. At the moment, I understand that the plant is not generating any power because of a gas issue that will be sorted out very soon.

โ€œAnother thing is that the capacity is very low. From what I gathered from the consortium, clearly the capacity can be improved from anywhere between 45 (504) megawatts to 1,072 ( 789.4) megawatts and thatโ€™s the essence of the contract that Chrome has here.

โ€œFor us, weโ€™ll do everything possible to ensure that such happens. Theyโ€™ve given us a timeline that anywhere between 18 and 24 months the maximum capacity will be achieved.

โ€œMy plea to them is that weโ€™ve virtually solved the need for power in Aba and that the first sets of power thatโ€™ll be generated here should be transmitted to Umuahia and distributed through EEDC which is equally owned by the Chrome group.

โ€œIโ€™ve gotten the approval and understanding that itโ€™ll happen. Iโ€™ve directed the Mayor of Ugwunagbo Local Government Area, Emeka Ihisiaba to liaise with the Commissioner for Works to give them Access to the plant.

โ€œThe whole idea is that a lot of materials are already at the Onne Port and evacuating them into this yard will be a tall order if you see the way we rigmaroled our way to get here because of poor access road.

โ€œIf we give them access itโ€™ll be easier for them to achieve their aim and in the end, weโ€™ll have a better power supply in the state.

โ€œThe other part of the state thatโ€™s not covered by the Aba IPP project can benefit from this while the other parts of the country will equally benefit because Iโ€™m sure this will equally go to the national grid,โ€ Otti said.

Speaking during the visit, the Chairman of Chrome Group, Sir Emeka Offor explained that the project was majorly geared towards enhancing power supply and that the company had to engage Governor Otti in the discussions because he is the Governor of Abia State who is very much interested in making Abia people have power 24 hours electricity supply.

โ€œI have to invite him so that he can see the areas that the state can support to make the project easier for us.

โ€œThe Governor has said he wants part of this power to be sent to Umuahia and by Godโ€™s grace weโ€™ll achieve the aim. For Chrome, weโ€™re just the EPC Contractor here.โ€

Present during the visit were officials of the Abia State Government, Senior Chrome Consortium officials as well as other members of the team.
