At Tectonics Engineering Group, rock coring forms part of our geotechnical investigations, helping us understand the conditions that influence infrastructure performance.

By retrieving cylindrical rock samples, our specialists can examine rock type, weathering and fractures. Laboratory testing provides further information about the rock’s engineering properties.

Combined with other ground investigations, these findings help inform foundation design, identify potential risks and guide construction planning for safer, more durable infrastructure.

Closing the week with a highlight from our engagement with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) representatives on technology, research and technical capacity development.

GMD/CEO Engr. (Mrs.) Aisha Kawu Gombe, PhD, presented Tectonics’ integrated research, education, industry model, highlighting laboratory development, technology transfer, sustainable infrastructure and training through TIT, TerraBridge and women-focused STEM programmes.

The discussions explored stronger testing facilities, skills and university to industry partnerships to support inclusive industrial growth and opportunities for youth and women across Nigeria and Africa.

What can the ground tell us before construction begins?

At the site of the new Iranian Embassy, Tectonics Engineering Group carried out a geotechnical investigation that included Standard Pe*******on Tests (SPT), trial pits, Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) tests, coring and other site assessments.

Each method helps build a clearer picture of the ground:

• SPT measures soil resistance at depth, providing information for foundation design.
• Trial pits expose near-surface soil layers for direct inspection.
• DCP testing helps assess how ground resistance changes across shallow layers.
• Coring retrieves samples from below the surface for closer examination and testing.

Together, these findings help engineers assess ground conditions, choose suitable foundations and address potential construction risks early.

Starting the week from the ground up.

Tectonics Engineering Group conducted a Standard Pe*******on Test (SPT), together with other geotechnical tests, at Transcorp Hilton Abuja for a proposed water-storage tank.

The investigation will provide essential information about the subsurface soil conditions, strength and bearing capacity of the site, supporting the development of a safe and suitable foundation design.

The GMD of Tectonics Engineering Group, together with the management of the Turkish Minerals and Geophysical Agency, recently held a strategic engagement at TÜVEK – Türkiye Yerbilimleri Veri ve Karot Bilgi Bankası in Beştepe, Ankara, Türkiye.
