In Ankara, Türkiye, Day 2 of Tectonics Engineering Group Delegation’s technical and educational engagement focused on advanced scientific technology, geological engineering, research, and laboratory development.

The delegation visited Anatomika, where advanced microscopes, laser analytical systems, and other sophisticated scientific equipment demonstrated the remarkable possibilities of modern laboratory technology. The machines were so impressive that we joked they could almost “investigate your family tree for the next five generations.” 😂🔬

The engagement continued at the Department of Geological Engineering, Ankara University, where the delegation explored world-class laboratories, research facilities, and equipment valued at over €30 million, including instruments supported through contributions from the university’s alumni. The visit highlighted the importance of investing in research infrastructure, education, innovation, and strong institutional development.

In Türkiye, Tectonics Engineering Group joined a strategic engagement focused on strengthening Nigeria - Türkiye collaboration in engineering, geo-environmental technology, infrastructure development, petroleum, mining, and mineral resources.

Day 1 was dedicated to showcasing Türkiye’s strengths in Engineering, Geo-Environmental Technology, Infrastructure Development, Petroleum, Mining, and Mineral Resources.

The engagement provided an excellent platform to exchange knowledge, explore advanced technologies, and identify opportunities for collaboration in laboratory development, technical training, innovation, and capacity building. These discussions reflect a shared commitment to promoting technology transfer and supporting sustainable infrastructure development across Nigeria and Africa.

Together, we are building stronger bridges between Türkiye and Africa through engineering, innovation, and strategic partnerships.

As we begin the new week, Tectonics Engineering Group reflects on the honour of welcoming dignitaries and representatives from Ahmadu Bello University and also from the Department of Geology in the university, for a productive engagement.

The visit provided an opportunity to exchange ideas on geoscience education, industry-relevant research, laboratory development, practical training, innovation and technical capacity building. TerraBridge was also discussed as one of the avenues for strengthening interaction between academia and industry.

We appreciate the valuable exchange and the shared interest in preparing students, researchers and professionals to address real geological, engineering and infrastructure challenges.

The future of geoscience is stronger when women are empowered with the knowledge, practical skills, and opportunities to lead.

Through the collaboration between Tectonics Engineering Group and the Nigerian Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (NAEGE), we are committed to developing the next generation of female geoscientists through laboratory training, mentorship, research, and technical capacity building.

The construction industry depends on both field and laboratory professionals. While site investigations are essential, laboratories are where soil, rock, concrete, asphalt, groundwater, and other engineering materials are tested to provide the data needed for safe and sustainable infrastructure.

Women who may not wish to work on construction sites can build rewarding careers as laboratory geoscientists and geotechnicians. Their expertise in testing, quality control, data analysis, and research is essential to foundation design, road construction, environmental management, and infrastructure development.

Moisture content and compaction are closely connected in geotechnical engineering. The amount of water in a soil affects how easily its particles rearrange and how densely the soil can be compacted.

Compaction testing determines the Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) and Maximum Dry Density (MDD), important reference values for other tests and construction-quality assessments.

For example, CBR testing evaluates the strength of compacted soil for road and pavement design, while field-density testing confirms whether the required level of compaction has been achieved on-site. Compacted samples may also be used for permeability and shear-strength tests to assess water flow, stability, and behaviour under load.

Together, these tests help improve bearing capacity, control settlement, and support safer roads, foundations, pavements, and embankments.
