7. Weathering: Exposure to weather, especially freeze-thaw cycles, can cause cracks.
8. Chemical damage: Exposure to chemicals, like salt or acid, can damage concrete.
9. Poor drainage: Water accumulation can cause erosion and cracks.
10. Soil movement: Soil movement or erosion beneath the slab can cause cracks.
11. Tree roots: Tree roots growing beneath the slab can cause cracks.
12. Poor curing: Inadequate curing can lead to weak concrete and cracks.

This is becoming a new normal in most construction sites. They call it pillar cranking. The cause of this pillar going out of alignment is poor setting out and poor setting of footings.

After discovering that the pillar is out of line where structurally it should be, the contractor or foreman will call his iron bender to use his bar and bring it into the right position. If you have 20-25 columns in a foundation and about 4 to 5 are like this, you have done an improper setting out or you did not supervise your excavation activities properly.

Note that not all pillars that you will apply this method of correction to and it will not have an impact on the structure's integrity. That is why setting out and setting footings and columns is a very important activity and should be done by a professional.

This type of Cranking can affect the structural integrity of buildings.
