Hollow blocks and solid blocks are both concrete masonry units
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HOLLOW BLOCKS AND SOLID BLOCKS ARE ---
1) hollow blocks have 2 or 3 more hollow cores running through them that makes them lighter , usually 25-40% less weight than solid blocks of the same size.
2) solid blocks are made of dense concrete with no void, it's heavier in weight
FUNCTIONALITY AND COMMON USE OF HOLLOW BLOCKS AND SOLID BLOCKS
1) HOLLOW BLOCKS ---
- Partitioning of walls in a building
- Perimeter fencing as it can be filled with concrete
- Where you want insulation and lighter structure
- Easy to run electrical conduits and plumbing through the cores
- the 9" of it makes building huge and help to distribute loads from beams to pillars as it's more bigger in size
2) SOLID BLOCKS --
- Load-bearing walls
- Foundation work
- Basements, retaining walls
- High-strength requirements
THERMAL AND SOUND INSULATION*
✓HOLLOW BLOCKS: The air cavities act as insulation. They keep interiors cooler in hot weather and provide better sound dampening. That’s why they’re common in residential buildings.
✓SOLID BLOCKS: Denser, so they transfer heat and sound more easily. Poorer insulation unless you add external insulation.
COST AND CONSTRUCTION SPEED
- HOLLOW BLOCKS : Use less concrete and are cheaper per unit. Easier to handle due to lower weight, so construction goes faster.
- SOLID BLOCKS : More material, higher cost, heavier to lift. Slower to work with but fewer blocks are often needed for structural work.
PREFERABLY
-Hollow blocks are more advisable to use in building as it keeps the interior cooler in hot weather, it is easy for electrical conduits etc and hardly crack in and out when there is Land slide/ movement also using 9" hollow gives the building more balance in terms of beams, columns and looks.
-Solid blocks are more advisable in soak-away/fence or related something of such nature but be sure you mould it by yourself to avoid using sand as a block as it's where block industries can use 1 bag of cement to get 100pcs of solid block. It has higher compressive strength when mould well for such work once your not ready to fill concrete inside hollow blocks
# # # Quick way to remember:
If the wall is holding up the building that doesn't have columns in terms of some economic bungalow → *solid blocks
