It may be reasonably correct to say that the level of success, usefulness...or even struggle...we experience in life, career or business can sometimes be influenced by the environment in which we operate.

In the same way, value and impact are better expressed where the conditions exist for them to thrive.

With that premise...

Welcome to...

The Science of Matching Tree Species to Their Environment.

Let's say you received or bought a mango seedling.

With excitement, you rushed to an empty space beside your house, dug a hole, planted it...and watered it.

Good environmental action, right?

Yes, you did well.

But...

That may not be enough.

You may be wondering by now...
“But Davrichyz, what else do you expect me to do?” 😊

Now, let me explain further...because that is the essence of this series.

Before you lower that seedling into the ground, one important assessment should be...

Is this actually the right place for this particular tree?

That decision can significantly influence whether the tree eventually thrives or struggles.

For instance, that little mango seedling beside your house may look harmless today.

But as the tree grows, its roots, canopy and demand for space also increase.

Years later, you may suddenly realise that you and the tree are competing for the same space.

Why?

The problem may simply be poor positioning.

Perhaps it was planted too close to the house...beneath a power line...near infrastructure...or on a piece of land you may soon need for something else.

Can you now see why successful tree planting requires more than a seedling and a hole in the ground?

Again, read this slowly...

TREES HAVE ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Different tree species respond differently to rainfall, temperature, soil conditions, moisture, sunlight and available space.

A species that thrives in one environment may struggle in another.

So, before planting, consider...
SOIL
Is it well-drained, waterlogged, shallow, fertile or compacted?

CLIMATE
Can the species tolerate the area's rainfall, temperature and dry season?

SPACE
How large will the tree eventually become? Is it too close to a building, drainage structure, road or power line?

PURPOSE
Are you planting for fruit, shade, food, erosion control, biodiversity, climate benefits...or economic value?

Your answers to these questions may reveal something we sometimes overlook about tree planting...

We ought not to plant only for the seedlings we see today.

We should plant for the trees they can become tomorrow.

A well-selected tree, planted in a suitable environment, has a much better opportunity to grow, survive and provide benefits for many years.

The success of tree planting should not be measured only by how many seedlings entered the ground.
We should be equally concerned about..

Where they were planted.
Whether they survived.

THE JOURNEY OF A PLASTIC BOTTLE AFTER YOU THROW IT AWAY

We often become more concerned about a problem when its consequences eventually reach us.

And environmental responsibility is not entirely different.

One simple way to understand your relationship with the environment is to observe what you do with that empty water bottle in your hand after the last drop has landed in your mouth.

Do you simply throw it “away”?

Interestingly, in environmental terms, there is really no such place as “away.”

Because what you call away, actually goes somewhere...within an environment.

For you, the story may have ended when you discarded that empty bottle.

But for the plastic bottle?

Its environmental journey may have just begun.

We often use the word “away” as though it were a particular destination.

But where exactly is away?

The waste bin?
The roadside?
The drainage channel?
The dumpsite?
The recycling facility?
The river?

Let me remind you of something you most likely already know...

When that plastic bottle leaves your hand, it doesn't simply disappear.

It goes somewhere.

And you ought to be concerned about that somewhere.

Otherwise, it is like throwing stones into a crowded market, because you are not presently standing inside it...

while forgetting that your family, friends, neighbours...or someone else loved ones...may be there.

Our environmental actions can travel beyond us.

And that is why where that empty bottle goes can determine what happens next.

JOURNEY 1: IT MAY BE COLLECTED AND RECOVERED
If the bottle enters a functioning waste-collection and recycling system, it may be collected, sorted and processed for material recovery.

That gives the plastic another opportunity to remain useful rather than immediately becoming environmental pollution.

But not every bottle follows this journey...

JOURNEY 2: IT MAY END UP AT A DISPOSAL SITE
A discarded bottle collected with mixed waste may eventually be transported to a dumpsite or landfill.

Unlike food and many biodegradable materials, conventional plastic bottles do not simply decompose quickly and disappear.

They can persist in the environment for a very long time.

JOURNEY 3: IT MAY ENTER THE OPEN ENVIRONMENT
Now imagine that same bottle being dropped carelessly beside the road.

Rain comes...
Runoff moves it into a gutter.
The gutter carries it into a drainage channel.
And from there, it may eventually reach a stream or river.

Suddenly, one small act of littering has become part of a much larger environmental problem.

Along the way, bottles and other plastic waste can accumulate in drainage systems and restrict water flow.

Remember our previous discussion about urban flooding?

This is one of the ways poor waste disposal can worsen the problem.

But something else can happen to that bottle over time.

Exposure to sunlight, heat and physical abrasion can gradually weaken and fragment plastic.

The bottle may break into smaller and smaller pieces, some eventually becoming what we call...

MICROPLASTICS.

So, even when you can no longer see the original bottle...
the plastic may not necessarily be gone.

Its form may simply have changed.

And what if you decide to take the plastic-burning route?

The bottle may disappear from your sight, but uncontrolled burning can release smoke, fine particles and potentially harmful pollutants into the air.

So, once again...

“Out of sight” does not necessarily mean “out of the environment.”

TODAY'S ENVIRONMENTAL INSIGHT
The environmental problem does not begin simply because a plastic bottle exists.

What happens after we use it matters enormously.

Was it properly collected?

Was it appropriately reused or recovered for recycling?

Or...

Was it carelessly littered or burned?

Did it enter a drainage system or waterway?

These different decisions can create very different environmental outcomes.

Now, let me renew your thinking about waste management...

Responsible waste management is not simply about moving waste away from where we can see it.

It is also about considering where the material goes next...and what happens to it there.

BUILD CREDIBILITY BEFORE IT’S NEEDED

You do not wait until you are thirsty before digging your well, nor start farming only when you are hungry and need food.

In the same way, you shouldn't wait until credibility is demanded of you, before you begin to build it.

That would be like meeting someone for the first time...and within a few minutes, they are already asking you to trust them with your money, business or an important responsibility.

Even when everything they say sounds convincing, something inside you may silently...but strongly protesting.

Why?

Because credibility is rarely created at the moment we need it.

It is usually the accumulated result of what people have already seen us do, deliver and represent over time.

That is why one of the smartest investments you can make in your career, business or leadership journey is to...

Build credibility before the need for it arises.

Unfortunately, I have known many people who remember my existence...or value, only when they are in trouble and need help.

And what makes this sad is that some continue this pattern repeatedly, yet wonder why meaningful relationships and opportunities become difficult to sustain.

Let me tell you this life-changing truth, about the simple principle of value exchange, that life repeatedly teaches us...but never pay attention.

We cannot continually expect to receive without learning to give value too...yes.

You may ignore that principle for a while, but eventually, you experience its consequences yourself.

Now, calm down and read this...slowly.

Let me show you something that may save you from unnecessary stress and disappointment...

Don't wait until you need someone's recommendation before you suddenly remember the relationship.

Build and maintain genuine relationships.

Don't wait until you need customers before improving your products or services.

Be competent...and dependable.

Don't wait until you need investors, before building systems and structures around your finances.

Be accountable...always.

And don't wait until you are given a leadership position before becoming mindful of your character.

Credibility has a memory.

Every promise you keep, makes a deposit.

Every responsibility you handle well, makes a deposit.

Every time you admit what you don't know instead of pretending, you make another deposit.

Every time your private conduct agrees with your public claims, you make a deposit too.

But the opposite is equally true...

Repeated excuses, careless work, broken promises, exaggeration and inconsistency make withdrawals as well.

This is why credibility should never be confused with visibility.

Visibility makes people notice you.

Credibility makes people trust you.

Spot the difference...and read this carefully..

Trust becomes particularly important when the stakes are higher.

A customer considering your service.
An employer considering you for greater responsibility.
A partner considering doing business with you.
A community deciding whether to follow your leadership.

At those moments, you may not have enough time...or even the opportunity...to begin explaining who you are.

Your reputation may already be doing that, before you enter the room.

WHY DOES A BIODIGESTER NEED TIME?

When we are in a hurry to get certain foods ready, we often look for ways to hasten the cooking process.

But regardless of the method we use, one basic principle remains...

The food must undergo the process required to become properly cooked.

With that simple analogy, I welcome you to the understanding of an important concept in biogas production...

HYDRAULIC RETENTION TIME.

Because we can't simply put organic waste into a biodigester today...and expect all of it to become biogas tomorrow.

Obviously, you may argue...

But the waste is there.
The microorganisms are there.
The biodigester is there.

So, why can't we just speed everything up?

Calm down...let's continue!

The answer to all that, brings us to an important principle in biogas science...TIME.

Now, let's look at it this way...

You want to cook beans, meat or bambara nuts.

And, you have the water, pot and heat ready...but the food still needs enough time, to cook properly.

Because, removing it too early simply means the cooking process, has not been completed.

Something similar happens inside a biodigester.
A biodigester is not just a tank, where organic waste enters from one side, and biogas immediately comes out from the other.

It is a living biological system.

Inside it, are different groups of microorganisms, working through different stages, to break down organic matter and eventually produce methane-rich biogas.

And those biological processes require time.
Scientists and engineers describe one important aspect of this as..

HYDRAULIC RETENTION TIME...HRT.

Don't let the name scare you. 😀

The basic idea is quite simple...

Hydraulic Retention Time is the average amount of time, material remains inside a biodigester, before being displaced or leaving the system.

Now, why are we having this series?

Because, if too much material is repeatedly pushed through a digester, that is too small for the rate at which it is being fed, the average retention time can become shorter.

In many situations, trying to force more material through a biological system, can work against the very microorganisms we depend on.

But there is another important part of all this...

There is no single retention time that is perfect for every biodigester.
The appropriate retention time can be influenced by factors such as...

Temperature.
Type and biodegradability of feedstock.
Digester design.
Operating conditions.
Biological activity within the system.

For example, biological processes generally proceed more slowly under colder conditions, which can affect the retention time, required for effective digestion.

This is why engineers must properly determine and design the size and operation of a biodigester, in relation to the amount of material entering the system, as well as how long it needs to remain there.

That relationship between volume, flow and time, is one of the reasons proper biodigester sizing matters.

TODAY'S ENVIRONMENTAL INSIGHT
Biogas production, is not simply about putting waste into a tank.

It is about creating the right conditions, for a biological process to happen effectively.

The microorganisms need suitable feedstock.
They need favourable environmental conditions.

And...
They need TIME.

WHY DOES THE AIR FEEL COOLER UNDER A TREE?

The modern air-conditioning systems we install in our homes and offices today for comfort...cooling, did not actually begin as household appliances.

I guess that sounds strange...right?

In 1902, Willis Carrier developed an early modern air-conditioning system, to solve temperature and humidity-control problems at a printing plant.

Now relax...let's begin to unpack and understand nature's own cooling system...one that existed long before 1902.

But first, let me ask you this...

Have you ever walked under the hot afternoon sun, and suddenly stepped beneath a large tree?

You immediately feel the difference...right?

That cooling experience...and the science behind it, is what we want to understand in today's series.

Trees are nature's living cooling infrastructure.

This is one reason trees and other forms of vegetation, are increasingly important in nature-based approaches, to climate-change mitigation and adaptation.

But let's continue...

Trees help cool their surroundings, mainly through shade and evapotranspiration.

So, you can see that it goes beyond simply saying...

“The tree provides shade.”

A healthy, mature tree does not only block sunlight.

It also interacts with heat, water and the atmosphere, in ways that can help cool its surroundings.

A tree canopy, through its leaves, intercepts some incoming sunlight, reducing the amount of solar energy reaching the ground, buildings and other surfaces beneath...around it.

But the tree is doing something else we cannot easily see.

It is moving water...

Through its roots, a tree absorbs water from the soil.
That water travels upward through the tree to its leaves.

The leaves contain tiny openings called stomata.
Through these openings, water vapour can leave the plant and enter the atmosphere...a process known as Transpiration.

And here is where the science becomes interesting...

As liquid water changes into water vapour, energy is required. This transfer of energy contributes to the cooling effect associated with vegetation.

When evaporation from surfaces and transpiration from plants are considered together, the process is known as...
EVAPOTRANSPIRATION.

Don't worry about the big word. 😀

The idea is simple...

Soil and other surfaces lose water through evaporation.
Plants release water through transpiration.

That is it...

Then together, these processes transfer water back into the atmosphere, while also influencing the surrounding energy balance.

This helps explain why a tree-covered environment can feel very different from a large, exposed concrete space.

One environment may be dominated by surfaces that absorb and store heat.

The other combines shade with living vegetation continually interacting with water, sunlight and the atmosphere.

TODAY'S ENVIRONMENTAL INSIGHT
A tree is a living environmental system.
It interacts with sunlight.
It moves water from the soil into the atmosphere.
It exchanges gases with the air.
It provides habitat for wildlife.

And over time, mature trees can influence the microclimate...the local atmospheric conditions around them.

DON’T CONFUSE MOVEMENT WITH PROGRESS

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” is different from saying, “I must do everything that comes my way just to prove that I can.”

The first reminds us that, we can receive strength to face what life requires of us.

The second can become an attempt to do everything, simply because we can...or because we want to be seen doing something.

But, capacity is not a command to pursue everything.

Sometimes, wisdom is knowing what deserves your strength...and what doesn't.

Let me confess something before we go further.

Today's topic is actually part of my own life story and experience.

Yes, I am good at doing many things.

Just let me see you doing something interesting, and before long, you may see me trying it too...and most times, even doing it better. 😀

But that, in itself, became part of my problem.

For many years, I found it difficult to concentrate on one particular thing for long enough.

Too many interests.
Too many ideas.
Too many possibilities.

And eventually, I had to learn an important lesson...

Direction is more important than speed...or busyness.

I don't know what your own challenge is right now.

But read this slowly, from someone who has learned it through experience...

Being busy is not the same as moving forward.

And engaging in many different activities, does not necessarily mean you are making progress.

Believe me...
In a single day, you may answer different calls.
Attend several meetings and appointments.
Reply to countless messages.
Move from one place and task to another, solving other people's problems.

And by evening, you are completely exhausted.

But, the real danger comes when most of those activities are not connected to your core purpose or priorities.

You may simply be majoring in the minor...using much energy, while moving in the wrong direction.

In simple terms...
Movement means, you are doing something.

Progress shows, what you are doing is taking you somewhere that matters.

I would have loved to use a treadmill to illustrate this...

Because, you can run and run without changing your physical location.

But then, I thought about it again...
At least, all that movement and sweat, gave you some good exercise. 😀

So technically, something was achieved.

And that itself, teaches us something very important...
Progress must be measured against the goal you are trying to achieve.

Real progress therefore, requires more than effort.
It demands clarity, priorities, focus and discipline, directed towards measurable outcomes.

Now, let me tell you something that may change the way you think about progress.

Progress is not always completing one massive project or launching an impressive programme.

Sometimes...
Completing that proposal or application you have been postponing, is progress.

Finishing one more chapter of the book you are reading...or writing, is progress.

Learning one more skill properly, especially one that aligns with your vision, is progress.

Saving a little more money, towards an important goal, is also progress.

Small?

Yes.
But moving you in the right direction.

THIS WEEK'S LEADERSHIP & GROWTH LESSON
Small steps in the right direction, will take you further than enormous energy, spent going nowhere.

So, as we begin another week, let's review our activities.

Which ones are actually moving us towards our goals?

And which ones are merely keeping us occupied...or gradually pulling us away from what really matters?

Remember...
Your ability to do many things, does not mean that all those things deserve your attention.

And, a full daily schedule is not necessarily evidence of a productive life.

Sometimes, one deliberately completed task, that moves your purpose forward, is worth more than ten activities that simply make you feel busy.

WHY SOIL IS ALIVE

Will it be correct to state that, the Earth, is the only planet where life exist?

Yes, i look forward...to be corrected.

It does not only produce...birth lives, but equally support...sustain them.

Could that be the reason, it is sometimes called, the "mother Earth".

But, let take few moments, to unpack...understand, the hidden ecosystem, functioning under our feets.

When, you pick up a handful of soil, it often seem you are simply staring at brown soil particles...right?

Howbeit, right inside those particles, are an entire living community...working quietly, but tirelessly beneath us.

And the able members of this powerful community includes...bacteria, fungi, tiny insects, earthworms, plant roots, organic matter, water, air, etc.

These are what always combined...operate together, to make the soil look as nothing, but dirt.

Now, let me simplify it further...

Lets look at it as a continuous natural cycle of operations...process, that support lives on earth.

For instance, leaves falls around trees, they don't remain there...forever.

Why...??

The tiny organisms...microorganisms, gradually break them down, and returning them, as nutrients to the soil.

Plant roots then interact with this underground environment, as they extract water and nutrients needed for their growth.

But, why should we even bother about all these?

It is simply because, healthy soil, performs jobs that directly affect human lives...and other living things, that depends on the mother Earth, for survival and sustenance.

It supports the crops, that feed us.

It stores and moves water.

It provides habitat, for countless organisms.

It helps to recycle nutrients.

And, soil organic matter also stores carbon, making soils an important part of the Earth's continuous carbon cycle.

But, here is the most interesting...but disturbing part of this serie.

The soil that all these happens in, can also lose its health...life.

Yes...read that once more.

And this is often caused by repeated burning, erosion, excessive disturbance...usage, loss of vegetation, poor land-management practices etc.

These actually combines, to damage soil structure and disrupt...displace the biological community within it.

The danger is that, some lands may still look like “soil” while gradually losing most of the qualities, that make healthy soil productive and resilient.

Today's Environmental Insight...
Protecting the mother Earth...soil, also means preserving a living system.

And not necessarily protecting just the ground.

This could also be the more reasons, why planting trees is beyond putting seedlings into holes.

Why farming is more than just adding fertilizer...manure.

And why safe environmental restoration...and effective management, cannot focus only on what we see above the ground.

As we can see, the health of what grows above us, is deeply connected to the health of what exists beneath us.

And this connects directly with our environmental vision.
