The layers of a typical flexible pavement structure, showing how a road is constructed from the bottom up. Here’s what each labeled layer represents:

1. Subgrade
• This is the natural soil prepared to receive the layers above.
• It must be properly compacted and stable to support the entire road structure.
• Its strength greatly affects pavement performance.
2. Sub-base
• A layer of granular material (like crushed stone or gravel) placed above the subgrade.
• It provides additional load distribution, drainage, and frost protection.
3. Base Course
• A high-quality layer of crushed stone or gravel placed above the sub-base.
• It bears most of the traffic load and provides structural strength.
• Must be well-compacted and stable.
4. Pavement (Surface Course)
• The topmost layer (usually asphalt or concrete).
• Provides a smooth, durable, and waterproof surface for vehicles.
• Resists wear, skid, and weather effects.
