A bitumen emulsion is a stable dispersion of fine bitumen droplets in an aqueous (water) phase, stabilized by a chemical emulsifier. These emulsions are applied at ambient temperatures, unlike hot-mix asphalt, providing benefits such as reduced energy consumption, lower emissions, and improved worker safety. The emulsifier gives the bitumen droplets an electrical charge, preventing them from coalescing and allowing them to remain suspended in the water. Emulsions are classified as anionic (negatively charged) or cationic (positively charged), and it is crucial never to mix anionic and cationic types, as this will destabilize the emulsion and cause the bitumen to separate.
