IN HISTORY IN YORÙBÁ LAND, THERE'S A TREE THAT HIDES ONLY THE INNOCENT CALL

Long ago, in the ancient kingdom of Ile-Ife, there was a sacred forest known only to the elders. At the center of that forest stood a mighty tree called “Igi Abo” — the Tree of Refuge.
The people believed the tree was planted by the spirit of Ogun, and protected by unseen forces. No one dared go near it… except in times of great danger.
One evening, a young hunter named Adewale was accused falsely of stealing a royal charm. The king’s guards and angry villagers began to chase him through the forest.
Breathing heavily, heart pounding, Adewale remembered the words of his grandmother:
“When the world turns against you, the forest will reveal its secret… if your heart is clean.”
With no hope left, he ran deep into the sacred forest and found the great tree — tall, ancient, and silent. Suddenly, the tree opened by itself, revealing a hidden doorway.
Adewale rushed inside.
Inside the tree was not darkness… but firelight, glowing symbols, and the whispers of ancient warriors. Outside, the villagers searched, shouting his name, passing the tree again and again… but their eyes could not see him.
As Adewale slowly opened the tree door to look outside, a deep voice echoed within:
“This tree does not hide the guilty… it protects the chosen.”
The ground trembled. The fire grew brighter.
“From this day, you are no longer a fugitive… you are the guardian of Igi Abo.”
When the villagers finally gave up and left, Adewale stepped out — but he was no longer the same man.
It is said that till today, when danger comes to the innocent, the tree still opens…
And sometimes, in the quiet of the forest, you will see someone watching from inside the tree…
